SETTLEMENTS

CWA, AT&T: Some 23,000 AT&T workers in California and Nevada, represented by the Communications Workers of America (CWA), reached a tentative agreement. The settlement terms are similar to those ratified by CWA locals in the Midwest last Saturday. The ratification vote is expected to be completed by Sept. 1.

The 20,000 members of CWA District 4 at AT&T Midwest ratified a three-year agreement. The settlement increases pay by about 9 percent over the contract term, including cost-of-living adjustments, and provides pension band increases of 2 percent in each year of the agreement.

“This agreement achieves members’ key goals. It maintains our members’ standard of living, safeguards quality health care for workers and retirees, and enhances employment security,” said CWA District 4 Vice President Seth Rosen.

CWA, FairPoint Communications: Customer service representatives at two FairPoint Communications call centers in Maine, represented by CWA Local 1400, ratified their first union contract, which provides job-security provisions.

AFT, Schools in O’Fallon, Ill.: Teachers in O’Fallon, represented by the AFT, voted on a tentative contract agreement. Certification of the vote is still pending. Details have not been released.

NEGOTIATIONS

AFA-CWA, United Airlines: Flight attendants at United Airlines, represented by the Association of Flight Attendants (AFA-CWA), filed a joint petition with the airline to the National Mediation Board (NMB) to start contract talks with  the help of mediation. The current agreement, which can be amended on Jan. 7, 2010, was negotiated during United’s last bankruptcy. It contains a provision to start negotiations early and speed up the process for a new contract by mutual agreement by Aug. 7, 2009.

Out in the grassroots, workers are mighty angry at the thought their health care benefits could be taxed in a health care reform plan.
