Tomorrow, Join Us for ‘A Better Deal’

Tomorrow, AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Liz Shuler will give the keynote address at the A Better Deal 2009 conference here in Washington, D.C.

The conference, which runs tomorrow and Friday, is hosted by Demos, an advocacy organization focused on building a fairer economy, and a variety of sponsor organizations focused on youth and the economy.

As our recent AFL-CIO report, “Young Workers: A Lost Decade,” made clear, this generation of young workers is facing an economy that’s badly broken. From credit card debt to unaffordable education, from a health care crisis to disappearing jobs, young people are suffering, and they need new policies and a new, dynamic progressive agenda to give them a voice in the workplace and a shot at a better life.

Shuler’s opening keynote address, set for tomorrow at 9:45 a.m., will focus on the challenges facing these young workers—a majority of them are finding it hard to pay their bills, and one-third are still living with their parents—and what we need to do to offer them a brighter future.
