The U.S. House is getting ready to vote on health care reform that provides affordable and quality care for all. This is a critical time, and every vote in Congress matters.

Today, we’re launching a National Week of Action for Health Care, and you can take part by letting Congress know we need health care reform now. Tell your senators and representative that we can’t wait any longer for health care reform that:

* Controls costs and doesn’t tax our benefits.

* Provides guaranteed coverage to all Americans.

* Includes a public health insurance plan option.

* Holds insurance companies accountable.

* Requires all employers to pay their fair share.

Place your call by clicking the “Call” button at the bottom of the box above. You will be asked to provide information so we will know to which members of Congress we should place your call.

Once you click, you’ll see some simple talking points to help you to know what to say. Shortly after, we will call you, play a short message and connect you directly—all at no cost to you (unless your phone service provider charges you for incoming calls, you may be charged for the call time).

If you would rather call later and dial yourself, call 1-877-323-5246.

We have a chance in the next few days to pass truly significant health care reform that reins in insurance company abuses and gives millions more access to affordable health coverage. Call your members of Congress and let them know we can’t wait.

At your national convention in Pittsburgh, you passed a unanimous resolution in favor of Single Payer health care reform.

Why do you continue to come out for a Public Option that will only affect 6 million Americans?

Single Payer would not only correct the problems with health care delivery by taking away the for-profit mechanism, but would also permit higher wages to workers in lieu of bloated health premiums.

The AFL-CIO should be front and center in support of Single Payer.
It’s the right fix for Americans and their workers.

Calling “your” congressman/woman is a fool’s game. With the health “care” industry pouring millions into the coffers of “our” congressman/woman and the labor movement begging at the steps who the hell do you think is going to get the attention and the wording in the laws?

Labor in the streets is the only answer to the crisis that besets capitalism. First and foremost we must break from the twin parties of capitalism and build a workers party that would emboss on it’s banners: U.S. out of Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq - Free Health Care for All - Housing and Jobs for All. Since capitalism can’t provide these basics then we must struggle to build a workers’ government that will provide them. The AFL-CIO leadership does not wish to struggle but beg because to struggle would end their cozy relationship with the bosses and their government.

Frisco Worker. Agreed. Time to follow through on Tony Mazzochi’s dream and build a bonafide US LABOR PARTY, finance it, back it and put up Congressional candidates in the districts where it matters. Let the Blue Dog “chips fall where they may!”

This is NOT a PUBLIC OPTION. This plan would assist a very TINY PERCENTAGE of people. And it will steer everyone involved in this farce into a tank infested with blood sucking insurance corporate sharks. Follow through on the promise, support Conyers and Kucinich. DEMAND SINGLE PAYER and the PASSAGE of HR-676. Time for the rank and file to WAKE UP. Edward R. Morrow was right, a nation of sheep, will get thrown to the wolves!

The AFL-CIO has finally acted and Urges YES Vote on Weiner Amendment

Washington, DC. Calling for a “yes” vote on the Weiner Medicare for All (HR 676) Amendment, the national AFL-CIO and eight unions have placed a full page advertisement in Thursday’s “Roll Call,” a Capital Hill newspaper.

In addition to the AFL-CIO the unions signing the ad are the International Association of Machinists (IAM), United Mine Workers (UMWA), International Longshore & Warehouse Union (ILWU), Utility Workers Union (UWUA), International Federation of Professional & Technical Engineers (IFPTE), California School Employees Association (CSEA), United Electrical Workers (UE), United American Nurses, and the California Nurses Association
    (CNA/NNOC).

Congressman Anthony Weiner and six democratic members of the House Energy
and Commerce Committee were promised a vote on their amendment by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The Weiner amendment substitutes the single payer language of HR 676 for the House healthcare reform bill.

Rules Committee Chairwoman Louise Slaughter told “The Hill” newspaper http://thehill.com/homenews/house/66457-saturday-health-vote that Weiner might be able to offer his amendment as a stand alone bill as early as this Friday.

IT IS URGENT that you call your representative on Friday and tell him/her that you support the AFL-CIO’s call for a “yes” vote on the Weiner Amendment. You can call toll free at 1-866-338-1015 and ask to be connected to your own representative.

Well it looks like single payer is dead, Rep. Weiner has caved, and pulled HR676 as an amendment to the House bill. Pelosi’s statement: “Within the next few days, the House will vote on the most comprehensive health care legislation in our history. Our bill will provide affordability to the middle class, security to our seniors, and responsibility to our children by not adding a dime to the deficit. While our bill contains unprecedented reforms, including an end to discrimination for pre-existing conditions and a prohibition on raising rates or dropping coverage if you become ill, our bill cannot include provisions some strongly advocated. The single payer alternative is one of those provisions that could not be included in H.R. 3962, but which has generated support within the Congress and throughout the country.
“Congressman Anthony Weiner has been a forceful and articulate advocate for the single payer approach and our legislation. His decision not to offer a single payer amendment during consideration of H.R. 3962 is a correct one, and helps advance the passage of important health reforms by this Congress. While single payer, like other popular proposals, is not included in the consensus bill we will vote on this week, Congressman Weiner has been a tireless and effective advocate for progress on health care, and his work has been a vital part of achieving health care reform.”

What about the Kucinich amendment, which will give the states the right to participate in a state-run Single Payer plan? Has that been killed off as well?

Out in the grassroots, workers are mighty angry at the thought their health care benefits could be taxed in a health care reform plan.
