The Office and Professional Employees (OPEIU) selected Mary Mahoney as the union’s new secretary-treasurer. Mahoney, currently an OPEIU vice president, will take office Jan. 1, 2010, and replace Nancy Wohlforth, who is retiring.
Mahoney began her union career more than 30 years ago as a member of OPEIU Local 6 in Quincy, Mass. After rising through the ranks, she was elected president of the local in 1995 and became business manager in 2001. She also serves as a vice president of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO and on the executive council for the Greater Boston Labor Council.
Mahoney said she is excited about “this new chapter in my life.”
I have been on the executive board for many years and have learned a lot and seen firsthand the responsibility of the secretary-treasurer. I know in this new role I’ll be faced with many challenges and I love a challenge.
Wohlforth said “retiring from OPEIU is so hard to do because I’ve had a love affair with this union since 1978, when I started out with Local 3 in San Francisco.”
And, as secretary-treasurer, I’ve had the most difficult, most exciting job of my life. I got the chance to help build this union of ours, and to fight for things we believe in like health care for all, domestic partner benefits and social justice, and to try to strengthen our pension funds both in good economic times and disastrous times.
Wohlforth was elected secretary-treasurer in 2003. She is co-president of the AFL-CIO constituency group Pride At Work and was elected to the AFL-CIO Executive Council in 2005.
