WORK STOPPAGES AND ACTIONS
ILWU, Rio Tinto: After unanimously rejecting a contract proposal, more than 500 miners in Boron, Calif., were locked out by mining giant Rio Tinto yesterday. The International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 30 has been negotiating with the company since September but said the latest offer “would allow the right to discriminate and practice cronyism.”
ARBITRATIONS AND LEGAL DEVELOPMENTS
UAW, Daimler Trucks: An arbitrator ruled in favor of UAW members when he determined Daimler Trucks North America violated its contract when it cut 900 jobs in North Carolina and moved the work to Mexico. Daimler Trucks was ordered to increase production at its Mount Holly, N.C., facility and to compensate workers who were affected by the outsourcing.
PASNAP-NNU, Temple University Health System: Nurses and other health care workers at Temple University Health System saw their tuition reimbursement benefit restored when the Pennsylvania Labor Relations Board ruled the hospital acted in bad faith when it unilaterally eliminated the benefit. The benefit provides tuition assistance for the children of some 1,500 members of the Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals (PASNAP-NNU).
NEGOTIATIONS
AFSCME, Columbus School District: Nonteaching workers at Ohio’s Columbus school district rejected a two-year contract proposal and authorized a strike. The 3,000 members of the Columbus School Employees Association (AFSCME) can strike 10 days after the strike vote is filed with the state.
UFCW, Albertsons: Grocery workers in Colorado have reached a tentative agreement with Albertsons. The members of United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 7 began voting on the contract Thursday.
ATU, Chicago Transit Authority: The unions representing bus and rail workers at the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) say hopes for an agreement are dimming. The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) offered proposals to CTA in an effort to avoid 1,000 layoffs scheduled for Feb. 7, but according to Darrell Jefferson, president of ATU Local 241, CTA “walked away” from the proposals.
GMP, Owens-Illinois: The Glass, Molders, Pottery, Plastic and Allied Workers (GMP) will negotiate severance packages for hundreds of workers at two Owens-Illinois plants slated for closure. News came Wednesday that the glass container manufacturer plans to shutter plants in Charlotte, Mich., and Lancaster, Pa., permanently laying off some 600 workers.
AFT-NEA, Escambia County School District: Teachers and Florida’s Escambia County school district have reached a tentative agreement, which will provide a 2.5 percent wage increase this year. Members of Escambia Education Association (AFT-NEA) will vote on the deal in the next two weeks.
