Senate Republican Coburn Blocks Aid to America’s Jobless

by Tula Connell, Mar 26, 2010

The Party of “No” gets ready to strike once more against working families.

As Congress considers much-needed relief for America’s jobless workers and debates proposals to jump-start the economy, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) blocked a stopgap bill to extend jobless benefits, saying its $9 billion cost should not be added to the national debt. Coburn’s block means the Senate, which goes on a two-week recess today, won’t consider helping jobless workers until at least April 12.

From the New York Times:

As a result, some people who have been out of work for more than six months will at least temporarily lose benefits. Health insurance subsidies for the jobless will also expire. Republicans said Senate negotiations had produced a compromise that did not pass muster in the House.

Coburn is taking up where Sen. Jim Bunning left off in sticking it to America’s workers who, unlike him, don’t have jobs or taxpayer-provided health care and retirement benefits. Bunning, a Kentucky Republican, earlier this month delayed unemployment benefits for 400,000 desperate Americans and forced an unnecessary furlough of another 2,000.

But unlike Bunning, an outsider to his own party, Coburn is supported by the majority of Republican senators who are indicating strong opposition to addressing the suffering of the nation’s nearly 17 million jobless workers.

Here’s Coburn’s online contact page. You know what to tell him.

I am an American and at one time I was proud of it, but seeing the racism and social and political confusion and battling how we as Americans should live under the jurisdiction of the Republicans, is an outrage. God put us on this earth to help each other not tear each other apart. Instead there has been pockets being fed from the people of the United States of America’s lives, also payments of salary boosted up with out our permission, health and lives of the Americans being put up for a price because, it will be taking away from the rich and the Republican office. and now you want to take away money from our mouths that help feed our families or ourselves, which sometimes is not enough, but we have to make due. How dare you and who made you gods to tell us when to sleep, when to die, when not to eat, when and where we can get sick. You remind me of communism not a Democracy. Who are you really helping us or yourselves.

There are other nations that come to America for freedom and help, little do they know it is a lie, because the ones that are born and raised here are treated like they are in their lands. How much money was taken from the people to pay for your vacations, meals, hotel stays, extra activities out side of your marriages and etc. ( But you want to impeach the president for extra marital affairs when you yourselves are not living right).

You come into office with your hands on the bible to be sworn in, tell me who are you swearing to God, the people or Satan!!!!

Please get a grip on real lives and the meaning of living and not just surviving.

      Do you have a heart?

People need to vote for new leadership at election time.

No doubt the party of NO gets in the way! They are sure quick to fund the wars. People are needing this bailout of sorts to keep their heads above water. Take care of America first!

The people who vote for republicans think they are above any unfortunate economic issues. It’s funny, though, how fast they stand in line for their unemployment check, food stamps and the like when they are in need.

I would participate in a march, but I can’t afford a plane ticket. I’ve been off work for more than 2 years now!

I wish the party of no jobs would wake up and realize the plight of the unemployed. The party has said no to oil and nuclear energy jobs for over 30 years. Now China has energy and has our jobs.
Many of my friends are still out of work. They want jobs, not handouts. They can’t finance a car or house with unemployment checks.

It is an absolute shame that someone this “Hard Hearted” could be elected to a position of this magnitude. I feel sorry for the people who sent him to Washington. What in the world they could have been thinking I will never know. This man needs to be thrown out of office on his head. If he was a good Doctor he would be back home practicing medicine. I wouldn’t wish that on an animal. Maybe a Million Man March is what we need to attract their attention.

If they were out of work or it was one of their immediate family members, you can BET they would sing a different tune. We need to make major changes come election time.

What we should do is wipe the slate clean in DC and start fresh! Neither party cares about the American people. All they care about is themselves! The two-party system DOES NOT WORK any longer.

OK, it is NOT enough for our union leaders to express their outrage. It is time to hit the streets and picket Tom Coburn’s home with a big “Coffee Mug” demonstration, telling him and the nation to “wake up!” and “smell the coffee!” Lets use a “MoveOn,org” style call his home and office so they get no rest, no letup until he reverses his fascistic postions on unemployment. Let’s call for a “Coffee Muggers” convention in his town and blitz the media until our voices are heard.

I’m not a Journalist, I’m just an American, who VOTE for, or against any politician who dosn’t listen to his citizens voice……..or the ones who listens to a “Lobbyist” who’s handing him $$$$. I am a “Snowbird”, Snowbirding to a 75 year old retired Operating Engineer from Northwest Indiana, Snowbirding is much easier than “Snow-shoveling”! I’m not looking for fame or fortune, but when I suggested to renew the”TEA PARTY” business, in early 2008, as to “Goat” some Americans to look Closer at their Representatives, who aren’t representing! I look occasionally at the News Medias across the Country,I am mostly Moderate Democrat because they usually listen to the “Organize Labor” groups, henceforth, I get a pretty good pension.

It’s obvious, if you are listening to the “Wingnuts”. They are the ones who are the Far Right, and Far Left, which are also Far OFF, only thinking there’s THE only party, and not the PEOPLE’S voices!!

Those Right, & Left Wingnuts, are “Coveting” their own Political Parties. Claiming to be the real Voices of their “Tea” parties. And I might add. I found out that the 1st Tea Party “Convention” was funded by the Republican Party. Now does this mean they are going to lay claim to the soul captors of the “TEA Party”? Hmnn, Do some of my New England relatives recall MY suggesting the Original Tea Party, which started in Boston? Come on Cousins, remember?……Then one of the Georgetown, Massachusetts, Fazio’s,( Remember Teddy?) sent me a “Video” of Ben Franklin look alike alluding to THE Tea Party? Didn’t take long to get the grip huh?

They are indeed NOT!! You will find more people are from an Independent nature, which is more often found in the middle of both parties, who are more concerned for the AMERICAN Citizen, which Washington seems to have the deft ear to the American people’ needs.

And that my friends is who “Washington” and apparently also the “Media” is listening to, the “Wingnuts”.

I believe the reality had really began to pop-up in Massachusetts, the originators, of the “Tea Party”, when they showed our middle ground Americans the real feelings of us all. And don’t forget, that’s the State was mostly Democrat, and said enough!! Thus so will eventually, the people of the Republican middle ground States, will dump theirs too!!

In the upcoming issue of Esquire magazine, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R) offers a harsh rebuke of his own party’s actions in recent years, arguing that the GOP “blew it” when they had the chance to govern the country.

This unemployment extension should be passed, but what about the millions who have run out of all their tiers of unemployment ,they have been all but forgotten by congress and everyone else.

The media is corporate owned and controlled. That is why the Tea Bagger racists get so much publicity. Hell, it was sponsored by Fox. I have been to many demonstrations with tens of thousands that are not even mentioned in the corporate news. Now, with the right-wing Supreme Court ruling that allows corporations to give unlimited amounts it will get worse. We have to double up our efforts. Please send your thoughts to newspapers and congressmen, not just here. Give them a steady stream of what we the people, the workers, think.
