Missing Miners Found Dead

by Donna Jablonski, Apr 10, 2010

Rescue workers searching the Upper Big Branch coal mine near Montcoal, W.V., located the bodies of four missing miners, officials announced early this morning. Their deaths bring the toll from a massive explosion April 5 at the troubled Massey Energy mine to 29, making this the worst coal mining disaster since 1970.

Read more about the tragedy and the history of safety and health violations at the mine here, here and here.

This story should be the first thing anyone clicking to the AFL-CIO website sees first. The story is not only a tragic one, it is emblematic of what’s wrong about this country. Is there another story that let’s America know why workers need unions? Is there any decent human being that doesn’t know that at this late date, there is absolutely no excuse for this “accident” to have happened? Is there any anyone who doesn’t know exactly who and what caused this tragedy to happen? Is there any moral excuse for the government, the Congress, and the White House not to call this one squarely? Don’t we owe this to these men, their families, and their community? Aren’t you tired of this crap?

Here’s my question. Are the mine owners going to be prosecuted for negligent homicide? Deliberately ignoring 450+ violations warrant that at lease.
