Join Us at the K Street Showdown May 17

by Mike Hall, May 13, 2010

We’re getting set for the Showdown on K Street, the Washington, D.C., power corridor where Big Bank and corporate lobbyists scheme and scam to kill Wall Street reform and peddle corporate influence on Capitol Hill.

On May 17, at 11:45 a.m., ET, working families will bring their influence to the nation’s capital. The AFL-CIO, National People’s Action, Move On, SEIU and others will rally to call out the lobbyists who do Wall Street’s dirty work. Click here to sign up to be there in person or join us online.

We’re especially targeting the lobbyists for Wall Street’s Big Six Banks: Bank of America, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, Morgan Stanley and Wells Fargo/Wachovia.

From last year to today, Big Banks are spending some $1.4 million a day in lobbying and political expenses to fight legislation that would reform the financial industry and help prevent another economic meltodown. There are four Big Bank lobbyists for every member of Congress.

The rally kicks off at 11:45 a.m., in McPherson Square at the intersection of K Street and Vermont Ave., N.W. We will live webstream the rally at www.aflcio.org, where you also can join in the discussion and leave your comments. Follow the action on Twitter via #bankshowdown and check back here, where we’ll be tweeting the event live. And invite your friends to join in person or online via Facebook.

Click here to sign up to be there in person or join us online. Put on your good guy white hat and join us in the Showdown on K Street.

The US has taken a horrendous fall over the past 30 years, as a direct result of government’s marriage to corporate America. It’s time to get a divorce and get serious about rebuilding the US. Get corps off of welfare, protect the right to form workers’ unions, and end the outflow of American jobs. Put actual rules on Big Business! The country has got to take priority over corporate greed.

Vote for Independent and Third Party candidates who support Publicly Financed campaigns for candidates who have demonstrable public support. In the Senate, only Bernie Sanders is supportive.

While the recent Supreme Court decision in favor of Citizens United is a set back, Labor should not take solace that they can contribute as well as the corporations. Labor cannot and should not compete w/ corporate money. Corporate money is multi-national, holds no allegiance to any flag or people for that matter.

Labor has got to reach out to all people. The “I’ve got mine” attitude needs to get the “deep six.” End the resentment and come out for publicly financed elections. Stop the bleeding,
reach out and grow by starting a US Labor Party.

Put the wealth back into the hands of the working people. They will spend it in this country and create jobs right here at home. Encourage union growth and everyone including companies will prosper when the employee’s become super-consumers again.

No matter how cheaply you manufacture your product overseas, it doesn’t matter to someone unemployed or working at some low paying job, they are not going to spend money on anything but the essentials.

Corporate greed cripples the super-consumers of the planet and without consumers corporations cannot survive.
