Obama Says ‘Made in America’ at Heart of U.S. Recovery

President Obama today told the AFL-CIO Executive Council, “We are going to keep fighting for an economy that works for everybody, not just a privileged few.” He also said that with the help of working families and their unions,
we are going to rebuild our economy stronger than before, and at the heart of it will be three simple words: made in America.
Speaking on his 49th birthday at the Washington (D.C) Convention Center, the president told the council that this fall’s election is a choice between
polices that encourage job creation here in America or encourage jobs to go elsewhere…The choice is whether we want to go forward or we want to go backwards to the same policies that got us into this mess in the first place.

He spoke about the need to invest in clean technology, like solar panels, wind turbines, nuclear plants, clean coal and new car batteries.
Instead of giving tax breaks to corporations that want to ship jobs overseas, we want to give tax breaks to companies that are investing right here in the United States of America.
Obama said that after nearly a decade of failed economic policies that “drove America’s economy into a ditch….We’re on the right track.”
Instead of losing millions of jobs, we have created jobs for six straight months in the private sector. Instead of an economy that is contracting, we’ve got an economy that is expanding. So the last thing we would want to do is go back to what we were doing before.
Responding to a question from AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka, Obama said “We are going to keep fighting for the Employee Free Choice Act.” Recalling Franklin D. Roosevelt’s comment that if he were a factory worker, he’d join a union, Obama said:.
Well, I tell you what. I think that’s true for workers generally. I think if I was a coal miner, I’d want a union representing me to make sure that I was safe and you did not have some of the tragedies that we’ve been seeing in the coal industry. If I was a teacher, I’d want a union to make sure that the teachers’ perspective was represented as we think about shaping an education system for our future.

yes made in america and now we need to get back TO..IN GOD WE TRUST. OUR LORD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST AND THE HOLY SPIRIT. WANDA EVANS
Obama needs to add some union leaders or former leaders to his White House staff.
Wall Street is over-represented and working Americans under-represented.
As a loyal Union member and a patriotic American I always try to buy American made good even it means having to buy used. I do have to compromise on occasion on unavailable domestically like digital camera but still stick with music from RCA tubes to avoid the ipods and other Chinese gadgets and still play vintage American made vinyl daily. I love this country but hate where Republicans on behalf of the top 2% have brought this country. I hope this vision becomes a reality and our country sheds these traitor scumbag republican sell-out puppets. What I want to know is why Democrats didn’t filibuster the tar out of these Bush/Cheyney outsourcing subsidies, these policies used OUR tax money to give our jobs to 3rd world commie slaves.
Protectionism is a word made up by commie lovers
Be American Buy American, the JOB you save may be your OWN!
All well and good…
He named two industries that are already mostly unionized. What of the other 88% of Americans that are not… this is the reason the EFCA is so important and should not be negotiable if Obama and the DEMs want union support.

It’s about time Made in America was spoken in was spoken by someone in Washinton
Made in America? Yeah that’s something I would like to see. All the jobs that are being outsourced now, need to have tariffs slapped on them. For example, If it costs a dollar to make a shoe in the US, and that shoe costs 10 cents to make elsewhere, then a 90 cent tariff is needed to level the playing field. Apply that principal to everything from phone banks, clothing, accounting or even animated cartoons, we would see an explosion of jobs in the US. Instead we have US companies sitting on tons of profits and not hiring, in the US. It’s the topic of my latest left of center political cartoon series. http://www.whatnowtoons.com
FINALLY!! Competition against the Millions of American Jobs that went to Mexico, China and other cheapo Countries! Now! Whirlpool of
Indiana, U.S.A., is almost gone from this Countrey after “firing” ALL
1800 Employees while building a new plant in Mexico. Nobody has
done anything to stop this sort of Thing! Mr. President, please assign
a good Person to check on these American Companies that run/sneak out of our Country to stop or make it very expensive
by taxation and/or Pension Plans for ex-employees! The Republicans
in the past have torn apart the Special Tax on Imports that come
from American Companies that moved away from us and laidoff
and Fired their Employees. This also must include Steel Companies that left or were driven out of Business by China. Look
at the “dead” American Towns that once were alive with American
Steel Plants! It is about time! Keep pushing American Unions and
thank the President for constant pushing on this. God Bless our
Country and Keep Fighting For It. This too is a War against US!
We do not need more tax breaks for corporations. We need a larger tarriff on the imports that come into this country that are made below our standard of living. We need someone in the Whitehouse that has the guts to levy tarrifs and/or get us out of these trade deals.
We also do not need nuclear power plants built as one of those going wrong will make the gulf oil spill look like a bear taking a dump in the woods.
President Obama needs to stop listening to Wall St. and start listening to us rank and file union members.
If President Obama ever has any more stimulus money for articles, like he did in the past for cars, I certainly hope that he has the stipulation that the goods or products MUST be made in America. I saw too many folks trade in under the “Cash For Clunkers” program American made vehicles for new Korean cars…. I hope he is serious about the Made In America….
Right-O spend the past 40 years building offshore manufacturing, and now, lip service.
Capitalism cannot be reformed.
The solution is called fair trade, in contrast to free trade, as in “look for a “fair trade” label. The solution is called buy American, as in “look at the label.” The solution is called plant a garden, as in “stop watching so much TV.” The solution is called, “spend your money wisely.” And remember, the Republican party is anti-union and an instrument of the Chamber of Commerce.

Dear Mr. President:
There is a grim reality for many, many of our citizens, people who have worked long and hard and honestly for many years, but now find that there is no longer a place for them or a way to provide for themselves and their families. The economic situation is much more dire than is being reported in the news. And your reelection is dependant on you changing the way things are and quickly!
Fully one third, the bottom third, of our nation’s people are now experiencing a life destroying economic depression! The next third or our people are now experiencing a very difficult recession. And the top third of our nation’s people are still doing well enough that they are little aware of the difficulties of the less fortunate in our country. Many at the bottom now suspect you are one of the top third and that you really don’t care.
There is a straight forward way to reverse the job loss trend in the United States. In so doing, you will re-ignite hope in millions of Americans, who have now given up their belief in the fundamental goodness of our country and these people will vote for you. If you accomplish this one thing, reversing the job loss trend in our country, you will guarantee your reelection. But, it is up to you to act, immediately!
By executive order, you, Mr. President, need to establish an Alternative Energy Bond Fund. The money from this fund would be expressly and solely used to fund the growth of the Alternative Energy Sector of the economy. This funding method could very quickly stimulate many million of permanent jobs, greatly strengthening the currency and the overall economy. It would also establish an enormous export industry. All these things would be very good for the people of the United States and for your reelection prospects.
It would work like this. The investing public would buy bonds that offer a per year return of 4-6%. The money would be placed in a fund that provides loans to anyone who wished to make a legitimate purchase or investment in alternative energy goods, services, or manufacturing. The loans would be repaid with 7-9% interest. The interest would be returned along with the principle to the fund, where it would once again be loaned out for further AE funding. The loans could be administered through existing business and financial structures and processes, those already in place to do loan vetting and financial do-diligence.
These loans would provide money to purchase a hybrid car or a solar heating system or a solar electric system or a wind power system for a home or a business. It would also provide funds for the startup or enlargement of businesses that manufacture alternative energy products, or provide related services. The funds would be provided to large businesses, such as the owner/operator of a solar power generation plant or a wind power plantation capable of producing megawatts of power to supply hundreds or thousands of customers. It would supply funds for energy savings devices and services, such as a manufacturer of a new more efficient type of building insulation, or it would pay to have that insulation installed in a building. It would be given to a home owner who wanted to install a heat pump to increase the efficiency of their existing heating and air conditioning system. It could provide the funds for the startup of a business that created software programs that allowed electric distribution companies to reduce energy losses by some amount.
It would supply all the providers and all the consumers of alternative energy goods, services and systems of any size with loans to quickly spur the growth of the Alternative Energy sector of the economy. The possibilities are endless.
Because the money to repay the bonds would come from the energy created and sold or from the reduction of a cost through energy savings, the bonds would be directly self financing. In fact, they will be the first bonds to ever pay for the goods or services that directly back their creation by producing the energy needed to back them. Instead of being backed by gold or silver, these energy bonds would be backed by the very real energy they produce or save. The electricity generated by a home solar electric system will save the home owner more money in electric bills than the cost of repaying the loan and the interest of 8%. From the repayment of this loaned money, the bonds are repaid along with the 4 to 6 % interest paid the original bond holders. In essence, the captured solar energy creates new money in the American financial system and it is the antithesis of the money now coming into existence through debt creation, money that is steadily weakening our nation and it’s economy. This self repayment characteristic is unique to investing in alternative energy systems that capture new energy or save energy. This new type of Alternative Energy backed money will strengthen our economy and our nation in all ways and it is the solution to the worsening fiscal debt situation that is presently destroying our country’s financial stability. Alternative Energy tech spending will repay with a net cash flow, in effect creating massive amounts of strong new capital for the United States.
Although these bonds would directly compete for available capital now placed in the Treasury Bills that are financing the Federal Deficit, the enormous economic and job growth that would result from the development of the alternative energy sector, would soon increase tax revenues and help pay down the debt. This transfer of money would create a business boom similar to the tech boom of the 1990′s, with it’s resultant tax revenue surplus. The difference is that this business boom will be much more fundamental to our overall economy, affecting all other present sectors, and it will be much larger and more long lasting. It will take 25-35 years to completely overhaul our present economic base and it’s energy foundation. It will substantially change our transportation, manufacturing, service industries, the consumption of goods, banking and financial services. It will also create a new export situation, as the U.S. becomes the largest supplier of alternative energy systems, products and services on Earth. It will quickly become the main spring driving the American economy!
During the successful establishment of the AE sector, having paid off all the bonds, the fund residual of 1-2% will have grown to hundreds of billions of dollars, . This remaining money could be put into the Social Security Trust fund to help all of our citizens, or perhaps it could be turned into a permanent research and development fund, to help keep the country at the forefront of scientific research.
Some of it might be used to provide low interest loans for people who choose to pursue scientific and technological educations.
The establishment of an Alternative Energy Bond Fund and the necessary administration structure is a relatively simple way to quickly and permanently turn the economy and the job situation around, while, at the same time, doing many good things for our country.
It is the one indispensable tool you need to create hope for millions of financially dispossessed citizens, thereby guaranteeing your reelection in 2012.
The people with hope of a new job are going to vote for you. The people with no hope are going to vote for the other guy. You’ll also enjoy the virtue of having done what is good for our country.
Sincerely,
James Flaherty
God help us all if he is re-elected in 2012. We are already flooded with third world Mexicans using and abusing the welfare system and he wants to give them amnesty. If the unemployed AMERICAN TAXPAYERS are hard hit now, what will it be if we allow that to happen. Illegal aliens drive new cars, have jobs and enjoy the fruits of AMERICAN TAXPAYERS. their incomes are twice that of the ordinary working men, because they have all the welfare besides their wages under the table; no taxes being paid.
I like what he says; however, we need to see action.
The first and most effective action would be for anyone who thinks that using an Alternative Energy Bond Fund to get the real development of AE tech moving with some scale is for the reader to send a copy of the letter to the White House with their own personal endorsement. A few thousand letters stating that the Bond Fund is a good idea would get the administration’s attention and then perhaps they might actually do something other than talk and talk…
J Flaherty
All talk and no action!
Do we punish China for unfair trade practices? No! Do we care that wind turbines are made in China! No. Do we partner with AAM to make sure that things are made in USA? No!
It is politics as usual. I will believe the president when I walk into a store and can easily find things made in USA! People, please don’t be fooled!
HEAR! HEAR!
I’m with you…. when I see/hear of penalties to companies that lay off people and are either getting govt subsidies or publicly traded on the stock market, then i’ll believe Obama and the Congress are working to save/make jobs!
What we need are global standards for a global economy. The Olympics were held in China. Everyone met the same standards. Includeing unanounced inspections and tests. As long as we mandate Federal Standards on American companies they should be enforced on all other manufactures. If you don’t like the standard, change it. But everyone meets it till it is changed. Includeing a free internet. This should be included in any tradeing agreement. Conservatives wave the flag but at heart are China loyalists. The dollar comes first. Billions of workers with no human rights. It isn’t gov’t they want out, it’s the American gov’t that troubles them. They are perfectly content with turning everything over to a Communist gov’t that controls all their companies.
I hope you don’t actually believe that Obama’s actually going to do anything. He sure does put on a good show. So does Ringling Brothers. To plagerize a post written by steamfitter, union voters voting Democrat is nothing less than battered wives syndrome. US Labor Party. P.S. hey Trumka, status quo, buddy. Don’t tip over your apple cart.
Jobs have been leaving this country for quite a while now…at least in the past 10 years or so. The American worker is working more hours to compensate for employers not wanting to spend money on hiring. Because of the economy, workers are being held hostage in a “like it or leave” work environment. There are no jobs to go to so they are told to be happy in their work (a little levity for you communists.) Yes, I believe Pres. Obama will turn things around. Why? because Democrats are not fearful of unions and workers, just as they have been champions of the poor, elderly, disabled and regular working people. Public sector jobs are the answer so that the economy can get going and employers feel confident enough to hire more people. Looking to business and corporations to save the economy is nieve and has never worked. The years of Bush/Cheney deceit and pillaging will take time to overcome.
Remember folks, that Congress needs to work WITH, not against, the Obama administration to make things happen. From 2000 – 2008, we didn’t even have a president that wanted what our president wants now. That era was not about job building but about corporate building and remember, a war that was only to last for months not years. Remember Haliburton? So many jobs have been lost prior to the Obama administration when downsizing occured to line the CEO’s pockets for their future. How quickly we forget how long we’ve been in this mess for. Wake up people and see who is on our side and work with change, not against it…….enduring more of the same BS we’ve had for too many years.
