Fox Admits It: Union Members’ Work Is ‘Awesome’

by Tula Connell, Aug 13, 2010

Looks like we got the attention of Stuart Varney at Fox News. After we challenged as grossly false his assault on the ability of union workers to produce high-tech products, Fox this morning ran a list of the “awesome” things unions build.

The talking heads there then tried to backtrack on their attacks on union members, denying they said union workers were not highly skilled—but that they think that unions bog down corporations with too many rules.

Rules like safety and health to ensure workers stay safe—and alive—on the job. And getting paid for overtime. And then there’s the weekend….

Watch Fox backtrack here.

Thanks to the unions who sent us some of the other highly-skilled jobs their members perform every day, adding to the top-notch list the Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE) originally helped us put together.

AFT notes the union represents most of the people holding patents. Writers Guild of America, East (WGAE), reminds everyone that (feel free to retweet):

@WGAEast: #unionsbuild every movie you love & whatever you’re watching after dinner tonight. (tx @amayatune)

Electrical Workers (IBEW) retweeted a cool video of the space shuttle, built by union members, and noted that union members also build nuclear subs and power plants.

And as WGAE noted, New York City’s Fox 5′s writers, graphic designers and other staff are all union members.

Too hilarious: ” New York City’s Fox 5’s writers, graphic designers and other staff are all union members.”
Perhaps a few of them helped Fox commentators change their tune about union labor!!!!!

Who ever loaded and published this web page above is certainly not a union member – because not even one of the links works!! Even a union apprentice would do a better job!!

No wonder the “Right Wing” rails on us!!

MOST ANYONE WHO HAS BEEN AROUND THE HEAVY CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY HAS EXPERIENCED THE VAST DIFFERENCE IN THE QUALITY AND THE TIMELINESS OF THE WORK COMPLETED BY UNION AND NON UNION LABOR. UNION JOBS ARE ALWAYS SUPERIOR TO NON UNION JOBS. I HAVE BEEN IN THE TRADES FOR OVER 64 YEARS AND AM STILL ACTIVE IN MY TRADE.I ALSO SERVED 4 YEARS DURING WW2 SO I BELIEVE I AM ENTITLED TO MAKE THESE OBSERVATIONS.

UNION LABOR DOES NOT MAKE THE MISTAKES THAT OCCUR ON NON UHION JOBS,ALL DECISIONS AS TO HOW THE WORK IS PERFORMED IS DICTATED TO THE UNION WORKER BY UNQUALIFIED SUPERVISION. IF MANAGEMENT HAD THE COURTESY AND INTELLIGENCE TO SEEK THE ADVICE OF TRADESMEN WHO HAVE BEEN AT THIER TRADES FOR SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF TIME AND HAVE ABSORBED THE EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE LEADING TO THE WISDOM OF PERFORMING THIER JOBS EVERYONE WOULD BENEFIT.

ALL OF THE TRADES HAVE TRAINING FACILITIES THAT TEACH EVERY ASPECT OF THE TRADE. NATURALLY EVERYONE WHO WORKS AT A JOB OR JOBS IS GOING TO BENEFIT FROM HANDS ON EXPERIENCE. I HAVE NEVER SEEN MANAGEMENT ASK A TRADESMAN TO VOICE AN OPINION AS TO THJE MOST SAFE, TIMELY AND FINISHED PRODUCT, GAINED THROUGH MANY YEARS OF EXPERIENCE AT THIER JOBS.

I HAVE BEEN ALL OVER THIS COUNTRY AND I USUALLY OBSERVE THE WORK BEING PERFORMED WHEREVER I HAPPEN TO BE. I HAVE NEVER SEEN A MORE PROFESSIONAL PERFORMANCE TO THIER JOBS THAN MY OWN LOCAL 138,IUOE. WE CANNOT SLOW DOWN A JOB BY SLOWING DOWN THE OPERATION OF THE EQUIPMENT USED AT THE JOB SITES AS MOST OF THE EQUIPMENT IS TO BIG TO HIDE AND CONSEQUENTLY THE CONTRACTOR USUALLY GETS A FULL DAYS PRODUCTION OUT OF ANY OF THE EQUIPMENT WE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR OPERATING.

THIS EQUIPMENT IS MADE TO ENHANCE THE EFFORTS OF THE TRADES WE PERFORM FOR.THIER IS A BUILT IN ANIMOSITY BETWEEN MANAGEMENT AND OPERATING ENGINEERS FROM VERY LONG AGO AND IT IS CERTAINLY NOT JUSTIFIED IN TODAYS LABOR MARKET. THE USE OF UNQUALIFIED INEXPERIENCED AND WHO CANNOT SPEAK OUR LANGUAGE MAKES ALL OF THE JOBS VERY UNSAFE. THERE ARE OVER 5000 FATALITIES EACH YEAR AND THIS FIGURE IS NOT IMPROVING BUT EXPANDING.

THE NORMAL USE OF CUTTING EXPENSES IS BY CUTTING SAFE WORKING CONDITIONS AND ALSO OF NOT KEEPING A CLEAN SAFE ENVIRONMENT FOR ALL OF US WORKERS. I HAVE SEEN CONTRACTORS TAKE CHANCES TO SAVE A FEW DOLLARS THAT USUALLY WIND UP FAILING AND CONSEQUENTLY WIND UP COSTING THREE TIMES THE PLANNED ON COST SAVINGS.

IN THESE TIMES THE ONLY WAY THAT THE NORMAL WORKING MAN IS GOING TO SURVIVE IS FOR THE TRADES TO UNITE IN A COMMON EFFORT TO PRESENT A UNITED WORK FORCE, AND TO PROTECT EACH TRADES WORKING CONDITIONS. THANK YOU, ED GALKE
