Laborers Returning to AFL-CIO

by James Parks, Aug 16, 2010

The Laborers (LIUNA) announced yesterday it is re-affiliating with the AFL-CIO effective Oct. 1, following the unanimous approval of the union’s General Executive Board.

In a statement, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka said:

More than ever, now is the moment for a unified labor movement. And as we rebuild and strengthen the labor movement, we will work together to create good jobs, restore a middle-class economy and elect leaders who stand with working people. Together, brick by brick, we will build an economy that works for everyone.

LIUNA President Terence O’Sullivan said in his statement:

Despite the historic success of the 2008 federal elections, too much is not getting done on Capitol Hill. A united union movement can better focus Congress—and particularly the U.S. Senate—on helping to lead our nation, rather than being locked in inaction.

LIUNA disaffiliated from the AFL-CIO in June 2006. At that time, the union expressed hope for an eventual reunification, continued to organize much of its political efforts through the AFL-CIO and has been engaged in ongoing discussions with the AFL-CIO for some time.

Richard Trumka is one of my heroes along with Merkley, Grayson,–America DOES have these heroes fighting for our lives as Americans facing huge job losses as a result of Bush Republican bribes to get ALL manufacturing OUT of America! Problem is that Obama kept these “trickle down” crazies employed as his advisors–I’m speaking of Robert Gibbs, Geitner, Sommers, and NBernanke–the sound machine of corporate Dems and the REAL financial terrorists now.

I’m in agreement with you… it’s encouraging that this union has rejoined the AFL-CIO. That old saying, ‘united we stand, divided we fall’ certainly applies to the Labor movement.

And the Obama/DNC machine needs a good, stern message from the AFL-CIO and Peter Trumka on what will not be tolerated on the layoffs and exodus of jobs overseas. IMO no corp getting a federal subsidy or reporting a profit should be allowed to lay-off people without a serious penalty….labor wealth should trump investor wealth.

Thank you, Rich Trumka and Terry O’Sullivan. The super rich want us as servants and nothing more! We will fight.

I wish the other unions would re-affiliate and stand united as one.

This is a great effort by LIUNA and the AFL-CIO. I look forward to working with both organizations in the very near future.

I am and have been a laborer for too many decades, all along I have been actively advocation that we start organizing internally, we organize the workers then we turn worse that the managment!

the message is COMMUNICATION education orginization

but why why is the very idea of members talking to ecah other so abhorant to “our” union leadership?

please please go to face book and type in stragetic organizing and read and then desiminate this with the members.

Remember that we the members are the union.

not the union “leadership” I’m am sorry but I have NEVER elected a leader in my life I have always strived and struggled to elect a represenative.

My union if it right I’ll keep it right.
If it is wrong I’ll malke it right.
that is what a true union man does
