Solis Labor Day Message Focuses on Jobs

In a Labor Day video message (also available in Spanish here) for America’s workers, Labor Secretary Hilda Solis says that in her travels around the country, “Many of you have told me you want an America that ‘produces things again.”
But more than anything else, no matter where I go and who I talk to, you’ve told me: “We need jobs.”
“In the cities and towns I’ve been to this past year, I’ve never once heard working people—or people who need and want work—demand special treatment. Americans don’t want a hand out . . . they just want a level playing field with clear rules, an opportunity to work hard, and a fair chance to provide for their families and get ahead.”
In this first-ever Labor Department video message for Labor Day, she outlines the steps the Obama administration has taken to reverse “the dangerous trend of job loss in our country, because just over a year ago we were losing almost 700,000 jobs a month.”
She also warns that in the coming months “policy makers will be debating what should come next.”
There are some who will suggest that when times are tough, it’s time to get tough on working people. They’ll suggest that we cut back on worker training, to cut back on worker safety . . . and to cut back on giving workers a voice in their workplace.
I totally disagree.
She reiterates her strong support for workers’ freedom to form unions.
And to those who want to deny workers a voice in the workplace, let me be clear: This Secretary of Labor recognizes respects and celebrates a workers’ right to organize and bargain collectively.
Solis also encourages workers to speak directly with her through a new worker outreach effort at talktosolis@dol.gov
On Labor Day, Solis will join President Obama and AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka at Milwaukee’s annual Laborfest.

Let me say…it’s the WORKING PEOPLE OF THIS COUNTRY THAT HAVE BAILED WALL STREET..AND BIG CORPORATE AMERICA OUT!!! WE NOT ONLY NEED JOBS…WE NEED TO PASS LEGISLATION TO FINE COMPANIES TO CONTINUE TO OUTSOURCE OUR JOBS… WE NEED GOOD PAYING JOBS!!!! I WATCHED A DOCUMENTARY LAST NIGHT..ON THE HOMELESS IN AMERICA.. THEY SHOWCASED FAMILIES, LIVING ACROSS THE STREET FROM DISNEYLAND IN CA… IN MOTELS.. WORKING PEOPLE…THAT HAD TO MAKE THAT DECISION..BECAUSE THEY COULD NO LONGER AFFORD AN ‘REG’ APT…ON THIER SALARIES!!! THE MIDDLE CLASS…WORKING PEOPLE HAVE FALLEN SO FAR BEHIND IN SALARY AND WAGES ITS’ SICKENING… THE RICHIEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD… AND THIS IS HAPPENING… AND THIS IS JUST ONE EXAMPLE..THERE ARE COUNTLESS OTHERS!!! I AM A LABOR PERSON..I’VE BEEN AN ACTIVIST MY ENTIRE LIFE… AND THIS IS THE WORST I’VE SEEN!!! LET’S GET TOGTHER UNION BROTHERS & SISTERS… UNLESS WE START TRADING NOTES W/EA OTHER.. If we want jobs, we must stop the government war on empoyers. Last night I had a good honest talk with a man who owns a successful US manufacturing company. He wants to expand here and hire more people but he is concerned that his taxes will go up, we can’t even pass trade agreements which will lower the cost of US shipments to other countries, and he is increasingly faced with so many rules and an anti-business government that it is simply easier and less risky to make his products elsewhere.
This man is a disabled minority and he loves AMerica but he has bet his life savings on this company and he is scared of his own government.
I understand why unions fight for worker rights – but the tone on this blog and from the AFL CIO is so hostile to employers (“tax them more!” “corporate greed”) – that we are dividing and hurting the country and forcingbusinesses to send jobs overseas. Our economy is starting to collapse and demanding the same benefits and pensions and higher taxes just accelerates job loss here.
The Employee Free Choice Act has been relegated to the back of the “to do” list. Never to get done. When are we going to do something about being “strung along” by the Dems and our national leadership?
Nuff said.

After 8 years of Mrs. Mitch McConnell, aka Elaine Chow from the Schrub administration, it’s nice to have someone who breaths some fresh air. Now, if we can get free choice act on the front burner?!

Corporations don’t pay taxes… Corporations include their taxes on the price of the product or service they provide to the general public… Workers and Consumers pay all the taxes…
Workers produce the wealth for their employers and is only fair for employers to share the wealth with their employees guaranteed under a contract…
