Ask the AFL-CIO Leadership Team a Question

by Tula Connell, Sep 9, 2010

If you could ask AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka one question, what would it be?

Now’s your chance.

On the one-year anniversary of their election, the AFL-CIO’s top leadership team, Trumka, Secretary-Treasurer Liz Shuler and Executive Vice President Arlene Holt Baker, will respond to your questions in a live Web chat on Thursday, Sept. 16, at 4 p.m. EDT at www.aflcio.org.

Submit your question now, in text form or by video, to www.aflcio.org/askofficers. Read and recommend other questions, get your friends to recommend yours and encourage them to submit questions, too.

The AFL-CIO leadership team will discuss our union movement, America’s jobs and economic crisis, the 2010 elections, AFL-CIO leadership, legislation, corporate greed and more—whatever is on your mind. They won’t be able to answer every one of the questions, but they’ll be online for at least 45 minutes and will respond to as many as possible.

Submit your question now to www.aflcio.org/askofficers.

Visit www.aflcio.org/askofficers to recommend questions. And then stop back here to watch the webcast live and comment in our live chat tool: Thursday, Sept. 16, at 4 p.m. EDT.

What will Mr Trumpka do to get all previous union members all of their past benefits, medical care, pensions, etc. for those who lost their jobs via the fraudulent workers comp system across the nation, where in the past, some unions, forced their members to go to WC lawyers and then illegally onto public funded programs like Social Security and Medicare(written into CBA-’s Contract bargaining agreements!

Could you provide some links to some articles or something that backs up what you are saying. I would like to know just what the hell you are talking about.

To Jerry–Wake up and smell the Fascism you’ve been supporting! This website has consistently produced facts that are researchable so–listen up and save your b___ from the ubba rich CEO’s who with Republican support–WILL send your job along with the jobs of 98% of Americans–overseas. Since when did the ubba rich help us? Under Bush over 600,000 jobs left the USA creating a huge deficit because no one has money to spend in our country–no job, no home, no food–I mean what more will you allow the Repubs to take from us by your stupidity and refusal to pay attention!

“On the one-year anniversary of their election” of “the AFL-CIO’s top leadership team”, President Trumka and the AFL-CIO “leadership team” needs to be held accountable for their “answers” already demonstrated.

Perhaps not one but many questions need to be asked of President Trumka. For example:

    * Why did President Trumka support the Corporate profiteers for “Health Care Reform” and ignore the unanimous vote of the delegates to the AFL-CIO Pittsburgh Convention to support universal, affordable “single payer” Medicare for all?

    * Why is the AFL-CIO (and the UAW) giving Obama and the Democrats $80 Million dollars for this November 2010 election? The latest Obama outrage is to establish a committe to destroy Social Security?

    * Why does the AFL-CIO continue to support the Democratic Party? The vast array of foreign and domestic policies of the Obama administration, with Democratic Party majorities in both houses, is fundamentally a continuation of the anti-worker pro corporate profits, pro-war policies of the Bush regime.

    * Why doesn’t the AFL-CIO call for a new political party?

Anti-worker, corrupt, even criminal corporate money and agendas control both Obama Democratic and Republican parties. A new party to represent the economic interests of all working people must be called for and established for the 2012 election,

    * Why doesn’t the AFL-CIO demand media access for the views of working people?

Corporate ownership and control of mass media has meant a continuous 24/7 indoctrination of pro-corporate and capitalist perspectives and agendas. Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck, the dominent Corporate spin on NPR and PBS, is never answered. This mass indoctrination in anti-worker perspectives has been so effective it has been instrumental in the on-going attack upon public education, public health, privatization of government, and even the promotion of unending wars for profit.

    * When will there be a new AFL-CIO convention?

Unable to seriously answer questions such as these, in their slavish support of Obama and the Democrats, President Trumka and the current Executive Council are incapable of leadership in the face of the many crises facing working people.. The many crises amount to a struggle for economic, social, ecological and political survival of working people, organized and unorganized.

What do you think of the Wall Street bail out money not being used to fix union pension plans, as rank and file members like me, are going to get reduce pension benefits? The same goes for 401k plans.

What do you think of the democrats saying, when Bush was president and passed medicare reform that put donut holes in medicare, that they were going to fix it and yet, when Obama got elected and health care was passed, fixing medicare wasn’t discussed?

What do you think of picketing campaign offices with picket signs that say Corporate America engages in Unfair Labor Practices. They Ship Jobs Overseas. What are You going to do about it?

Why do you continue to employ illegal aliens? They take jobs from AMERICAN CITIZENS. Don’t you think you should send them back to wherever they came from, and HIRE AMERICAN CIOTIZENS WHO PAY THE TAXES?

A No vote for Democrats until the consumer interest tax deduction is reinstituted by the Obama administration for 2010 tax year and retro to 2008-2009!

Since Bush’s credit-card foreign policy, the TARP, and impending domestic stimulus package render fiscal discipline moot for the next generation, why don’t the Democrats bring back something that benefited consumers but was reduced (and eventually eliminated) in the 1986 tax reform? Since 1986, corporations and the wealthy have received numerous windfalls, havens, and tax breaks and yet this consumer benefit has been off-limits?

Specifically, why haven’t the Democrats started banging the drums to re-institute the consumer interest tax deduction? (by Decon Blues, 12-23-08)

Voters need substantive relief if the DNC wants to keep solicitating for campaign funds. This is the only alternative for successful Democratic election in 2010. If Republicans begin to promote this, a Democratic win is impossible!

Comments section should not be a forum for discussion between two parties. Let a comment stand or fall on its merits.

As a more than 50-year union member, I would like to know what plans the leadership has for helping President Obama and our reluctant Senators to move desperately needed legislation forward.

As a Medicare recipient, I still cannot answer whether I am being or will be adversely affected by the health care adopted by these same reluctant Senators and signed into law by our president. I need help in forming responses to this.

We’re headed down the road for a Republican sweep because short-memory voters believe what the media tells them. Our airways are no longer owned by the American people but corporate internationalists. Newspapers and other periodicals have always been owned by them, but there was a time that we had laws and regulations that prevented this one-sided view for the airways that we now have.

      I understand your feelings Cappy.
I am a IUOE member and we may be going on strike because we are asking management for $1.45 an Hour (we are giving $1.65 Hr) to help us cover our skyrocketing medical costs. for only 2 years. because our Benefit Experts still do not know what Obamacare will cost us and we will not know for at least 2 years.
My reps in the House and Senate tell me that the “prescription plan donut holes were fixed.

I see something different. The only network that the left screams about is Fox news. It seems liberals control the other networks because nothing is said about them. In truth the liberals are in control of government ,media and academia. If things are going bad I know who to blame.

Organized Labor is a top down structure. Local labor councils just re-invent the wheel every year with little or no coordination from the state or national AFL-CIO. For example every labor hall should be a place for unemployed workers to come for whatever help they need. But nothing is going on.

I was at our State Labor Council Convention 2 weeks ago…absolutely no energy and no ideas! Like it or not the opinion of most union staff has gone from “we are getting our butts kicked” to “how long can we last.” The worse it gets the tighter the little circle of the “insiders” gets to protect what they have ….sorry but that is an observation from a 30 year union staff career.

Unions use to be Against illegal immigrants, when did AFL-CIO Management Changed?
Do AFL-CIO Realize if the Government (ICE) DEPORTS illegal immigrants JOBS will open up For UNITED STATES CITIZENS?
When illegal immingrants are DEPORTED UNITED STATES CITIZENS ARE WILLING TO DO THE WORK. Example; Meatpacking Plants.
Why doesn’t the AFL-CIO Listen to the Members? I do NOT want my Union Dues to be Used for the Democrats Party.
Democrats use to be AGAINST illegal immigrants.
Thank You ARIZONA and the SAVE ACT BILL and E-VERIFY.

Government car auctions are auctions of surplus and seized vehicles conducted by the states, the local police and also federal government institutions. The cars auctioned this way are confiscated vehicles mainly from law-breakers. At these auctions you can find a real bargain on almost new cars, luxury models as well as ordinary cars in excellent condition.

Believe it or not every day people abandon their cars at the most unbelievable locations and never pick them up again. An industry has been built upon picking up abandoned vehicles. After searching for the owners and not being successful in finding them, the cars are auctioned.

Last but not least we have repossessed car auctions. These are cars that Banks or Credit Companies repossess from customers who stop paying, for whatever reasons on their loans, and are sold at auctions to recover the remaining balance of the loans.

Auctions are probably the best sources for cheap new and used cars.
