Ohio House Committee Rams Through New Attack on Workers

Ohio House Republicans today rammed through a revised—and worse—version of S.B. 5 that eliminates the rights of 350,000 public employees to bargain for middle-class jobs. But they refused requests by Democrats for time to read the new bill that had more than 30 major changes.
This afternoon’s action by the House Commerce and Labor Committee came as about 1,000 teachers, firefighters and other public service workers rallied inside and outside the Capitol building in Columbus with chants of “Kill the bill” (see video).
The full state House is expected to vote on the bill—strongly backed by Gov. John Kasich (R )—tomorrow with the Senate taking up the revised version by the end of the week.
When committee chairman Joseph Uecker (R) refused requests for time to study the bill, Rep. Bob Hagan (D) said he had never seen so much secrecy and partisanship in his 25 years in the legislature. Earlier Uecker ordered petitions opposing the bill with more than 65,000 signatures removed from the hearing room.
Jennifer Blair, 33, a music teacher from Westerville, told the Associated Press she is protesting a bill she believes will “destroy public education as we know it.”

William Leibensperger, vice-president of the Ohio Education Association (OHEA), said the committee “clearly made a horrible bill even worse,” and that Kaisich’s and the Republican’s real goal is
silencing the voice of people who collectively bargain on behalf of their members, and, in our case, on behalf of the children we work with.

dont just sit there do something against it Ohioans !!
I am glad to see people coming together for this cause,but i am a little disheartened by the amount of reply’s on the site.Please people get it together, all labor needs you to fight the fight of your lives you have to know this country is depending on you and your ability to fight this attack on workers.
This is the Republicans way of telling the people that we are going to make you get down and grovel at our feet. We are back where we were in 1930. The Republicans are literally destroying the American way of life! Unions and collective bargaining are what gave thje American workers the incentive to create the best quality products in the world! The greed of our corporations is why the jobs were sent overseas, not the high labor cost. When the people do not have jobs the corporations products will not be sold. When they are not sold they will close down! Then the stock markets will crash. The end of corporate America is coming soon because of corporate greed!
Just maybe its time for workers to go back to the thirties and react as they did in the thirties
I hear all the time from the right-wing talking heads how the Democrats ideas are Socialism. If this isn’t SOCIALISM , I don’t know what is!!!When ever the repubs. get a majority, they call it a “MANDATE” to wipe out any Progressive ideas. Even if they hold a 51 to 50 advantage.A mandate is when you hold a 2/3′s(66%) majority and the vote can be passed without a President’s or a Governor’s signature. The repubs. in every state that is trying to stop collective bargaining has only a small majority and hopefully will be gone after the re-calls next year!!! Thanks…
I would like to know why Walker is not in jail. How can you defy a court order and get away with it? If that were one of us, we would have a warrant issued for our arrest. Scumbags who would propose such an underhanded and EVIL tactic as this SHOULD BE PROSECUTED AND FOREVER BANNED FROM HOLDING PUBLIC OFFICE AGAIN! I made and carried a sign that was notorious at the rallies I’ve attended, with people almost lined up to photograph it. One side reads, “May 1933 Hitler Abolishes Unions”, to remind people of the past history of union busting. The other side pulls no punches and exclaims: “Stop These EVIL, Bought-out, Plutocratic Republican Idiots, NOW!” Please feel free to duplicate this sign for your activism across the country! We HAVE to stand up for our rights before they disappear under this Tea Party-driven drivel that the EVIL Repugnicans have adopted. LONG LIVE COLLECTIVE BARGAINING, UNIONS AND FAIR WAGES!

Teachers.. Just stay home. Instead of ‘babysitting’ the children while the parents work, stay home and let the parents ‘homeschool’ their little darlings. ‘Can’t leave the kids home alone’. No real education. No school supplies’. When the parents find out what the REPUBLICANS have done to THEM, they’ll get ride of Kasish and his merry band of BAG MEN and thieves.
Give it a few weeks and then watch and HEAR the weeping and knashing of teeth when the parents can’t go to their jobs. Take a stand Teachers. Need a COP, call a politician. Your house is on fire, call Kasish. Someone is rapeing your 6 year old, too bad, call the Prosocuters office and no one answers the phone. No contract. No work.

Stop using middle CLASS when referring to workers. It plays into the divisions the right wing is fostering. We are not in a different class from lower wage earners (regrettably, some of whom are unionized), we are middle-income workers. Please.

A NATIONAL GENERAL STRIKE is getting very near. When everything else fails we will have to give the order. Pay close attention people, this is our time, our year, the year of the American working-class!
Just a little history for all of you– In 1930 Hitler attacked the Trade Unions, then continued on to ban bargaining rights of the workers, thus destroying Unions! Hmm-food for thought!

I am in the private sector but what the public employees are facing now is going to slap the rest of us in the face sooner rather than later.
