Perry, Kasich Deny Jobless Workers $731 Million in Jobless Help
![]() |
Just in case anybody wondered if Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) and Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R) give a whit about jobless workers in their states, we’ve got an answer. They don’t.
Both let a Monday deadline pass to apply for hundreds of millions of dollars—$555 million in Texas and $176 million in Ohio—in federal funds for unemployment insurance (UI) benefits. The money was part of the 2009 economic stimulus package.
To receive the money, both states would have had to slightly expand eligibility requirements for receiving UI, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. But both Perry and Kasich turned their backs on the money and the jobless workers.
Each state had four options in providing more UI help for their unemployed residents and only had to pick two of the ways. The states could have made workers in job training programs or those seeking part-time employment eligible. They could have provided larger benefits for unemployed workers with children or to people who have to leave their jobs because of domestic violence, a spouse’s job transfer or illness of an immediate relative.
At least 33 other states found no problems with the requirements, but Texas and Ohio claimed the modest increase in costs for expanded eligibility was too much to bear.
In Texas, Ed Sills, Texas AFL-CIO communications director, says some high-ranking Perry administration officials believed the state could have easily afforded the small extra costs.
Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst calculated that the higher cost of modestly improved eligibility, which was a condition of receiving the stimulus funds, would have been offset by the $555 million for more than a decade.
Instead, unemployed workers in Texas continue to suffer with a rock-bottom eligibility rate for UI benefits and employers continue to pay much higher taxes.
Employers as well as workers benefit from the federal unemployment funds, through lower unemployment taxes or delays in scheduled hikes.
But Perry and Kasich made their choice and eventually so will voters.

Kasich really could be douche of the year.
The public in Texas and in Ohio should permanently lay off Perry and Kasich and deny THEM unemployment benefits and assistance!!!!!!
Hey.. that’s a great new illustration of a sign that says a lot, replacing the original illustration to this article!
I live in Texas and remember, Perry won by a 5% margin, not a mandate. If he were to run for gov today, I think he might lose, just as Kasich would.
Well, the unemployed in Texas need to give Perry a Texas sized ass whipping. He likes to spout his big bad cowboy BS. Pull the cowboy rough stuff on the ahole, hang the SOB from the nearest tree. He’s one smart assed cocky ignorant low life bastard.Same with Kasich, hang the bastard. If this doesn’t show Americans what the Repiglicons and Douche Baggers think of them,I don’t know what it’ll take. All they care about is the filthy rich and the corporate CEOs with their bundles of lobbyist money. They take this money and then bring up bills for these leeches that screw over everyday honest hard working American.Believe me,theres many Repigs and Baggers with reserved front row seats in hell waiting on them.
Oh John, you are so eloquint! But tuh’ tell thuh truth, you’re being too honest!
(grinning in approval — do I sound like “shrub” did?)
Well Put my Frend.
And this year’s Scrooge Award goes to…
They both need to be voted out to bad they were elected or they would be out on the concrete also. So wgat are these people supose to do now? I guess they may need to take to the streets and try to find food somewhere or shelter. I hope the people of this country realize what these rats are all about.
In order to get the money each state would have had to spend a lot more of its own money. This is the bad side but nobody sees that. This is what’s wrong with the 16th Amendment that allows the federal government to tax directly.
Each state should tax and send to the federal government what’s needed and spend the rest of the tax collected itself. Instead, the federal government CONTROLS what the states can do by holding the “carrot” of money enticing them how to spend it.
We need to get the federal government out of running the sovereign states.

you’re a bit confused. have you been listening to tea bag retoric? Why not do away with medicare and social security too.
True to stay on the subject. Nobody said anything about medicare and social security. We’re talking about state control and autonomy.
Try and stop excessive state spending and the liberal socialists always switch the subject to medicate and social security.

You’ve got that SO right, Kastigar! The federal government should take its “cut” from what the STATES tax, it isn’t the IRS that should handle tax returns, it’s the STATES!!!! And I’m not talking about the unworkable CONFEDERACY, I’m talking about sound controls over how much we all are taxed, which should be 20% MAXIMUM without deductions EXCEPT for those deductions for those direct expenses to create income AND for a primary residential domicile, and NOTHING ELSE including finance interest on credit cards or anything else!
And as for Social Security, that needs to be a sacred TRUST, but as for Medicare and MEdicaid, Razenj, Medicare and Medicaid need to be REPLACED, to wit:
Mr Libris Fidelis on 25.08.2011 at 09:46 (Reply)
While neither Medicare nor Medicaid should be eliminated in any way PRIOR to a suitable replacement, as I have been posting all these months in the AFL-CIO blog and for the past three years ever since that fraudulent HR-676 bill proposed a blank cheque to the insurance-pharmaceutical-commercial hospital-and phony health maintenance organization corporations, which corporations suck up 60% of the Medicare and Medicaid funding, (whew), WE NEED THE HAWAI’IAN UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE SYSTEM THAT WAS OUTLAWED BY CONGRESS BECAUSE THE HAWAI’IAN UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE SYSTEM EXCLUDES PAYMENT TO THE INSURANCE-PHARMACEUTICAL-COMMERCIAL HOSPITAL- and phony – HEALTH MAINTENANCE ORGANIZATION CORPORATIONS !!!!!!!
ONLY the Hawai’ian Universal Health Care System as proposed to Congress in 1993 FOCUSES both on encouraging good health in our public but also FOCUSES on funding the clinics and physicians who DIRECTLY SERVE THE PUBLIC to actually CURE a medical malady or illness!
UNLIKE MEDICARE… the Hawai’ian Universal Health Care System would and WILL IF ENACTED kick the insurance-pharmaceutical-commercial hospital-phony health maintenance organization CORPORATIONS out of the public health care driver’s seat and will pull the public health care and the physicians OUT OF THE BACK SEAT and put them behind the steering wheel to decide the meddical treatment that patients DESERVE!!!!!
So let us QUIT patronizing the subverted prostitute to commercialization of our government that we call MEDICARE, and let us ADVOCATE-EDUCATE-AND DEMAND LEGALIZATION OF THE HAWAI’IAN UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE SYSTEM TO REPLACE MEDICARE AND MEDICAID FOR OUR NATION’s FIRST EFFECTIVE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM!!! Then we will have 60% more government funding to spend on public health care WITHOUT THE GRAFT AND SUBVERSIVE FOR-PROFIT MANIPULATIONS THAT MAKE MEDICARE AND MEDICAID BE SUCH A PROFITABLE TRANSFUSION OF PUBLIC HEALTH CARE FUNDING!!!
I don’t get why everyone wants to make less government?……1.)Good paying jobs. 2.)”We need less regulation!”…sure because states and especially corporations do the right thing on their own.(Savings and lone scandal anyone? Toxic asset bubble and market crash. For you folks from way back THE GREAT DEPRESSION.). 3.)have you ever heard the saying “one person ruined it for use all”? We need government to tell us what to do because most people do the wrong thing out of GREED.
Use your heads for smart thinking instead of stupid blather.
There is no such thing as a sovereign states. This is the United States. We are suppose to be as one. That is why you have a state like Texas, and some others. They want to make there own rules. They want to opt-out. They did that back 1861. Texas is one of the richest states in America. But look were they in the poverty rate they rank No# 45 out of fifty. High School graduation rate rank No#36 out of 50. There teachers avg pay $47,175.00 rank No#32 out of 50. Now that is sad but here something even more sick. Wisconsin ranks No#1 in Graduation. Avg. pay$ 54,602.00 rank No#11. Quality of education No#2. Now that jack ass Rick Scott just took there rights to bargen away. Hell if the state of Wisconsin teachers would get payed on marit like the Republicans want, they should be making $80,000.00 a year. But Scott wants to take away. I think all Wisconsin people should vote to set Scott’s pay at $9,700.00.
We didn’t start out as one – we formed a ‘union’ of 13 sovereign states, each one independent and autonomous. The problem is the Constitution has been amended too many times – the 16th and 17th should be rescinded.
If a state wants to secede from the union why shouldn’t it be allowed to?
The Federal Government takes out money and then gives it back ONLY if we do what they command.
Other than defending the country why do we need the federal government to control things.
Many lives would have been saved if the north hadn’t attacked the south. Slavery would have ended by itself, it’s an economic system that simply doesn’t work. The War Between the States was unnecessary, and Lincoln was aggressive for starting it.

This issue was resolved way back in the 1860s. You remember, don’t you? That was when the evil federal government forced the ‘sovereign’ states to give up their cherished and beloved system of slavery. Too bad, because under slavery, there was no unemployment and hardly any prisons, at least for Blacks, whereas today, almost half of the US African- American population are either unemployed or in prison. Don’t you pine for those good old days?
Wjen Perry got elected inTexas there were more than two people running so he got less than 50 percent of the vote When more than 2 or 3 people run for the same office there should be an elemination so that only two end up running That will ensure that on person will get a bit more than 50 percent. Perry was only populr withabout 35 percent of the voters 65 percent wanted some one oelse.
.
Texas and Ohio,
Dear citizens use your voting rights and give these two the boot!.
Perry for president? REALLY!.
Perry and his Repulican friends have fooled the people of Texas for a long time. They have treated the working class of Texas like red-headed step-children the entire time they have controlled all of the state bureaucracys. They get to do what ever they want by playing the religion, no-abortion, anti-union card. Voters in Texas are so convinced that these are the only issues worth voting on. The voters do not think about the real issues that affect their lives. This is the reason that we have a bought paid for state bureacracy. Texas cut school funding so much that the pupil to teacher ratio just went up drasticly. We were already not educating our students so that they could get and hold a living wage job. Now it will be worse. Perry is not qualified to hold the job of President of the United States of America.
I think this is cynical politics. If people are suffering they’ll ironically vote out whoever the president and majority in congress are. The Republicans want workers to be suffering and pissed off, blame the Democrats, put them in office, and then they can really go after Social Security, Medicare, and so forth. They may be outsmarting themselves.
we need to update the political parties to today standards, not republicans and democrates but aristocrates and pheasents
Maybe these guys do not realize or are not smart enough to see that the people they are hurting also are people that voted for them. These idiots are hurting their own voters because they think that by doing this they will balance our economy. What a pair of ignorant Governors. Isn’t Perry running for president? Well ok Republicans who voted for these guys and now are out of UI your better thinkg about how many times you had to talk to the mortgage or rental guy and tell him you can’t make the payment or how many times you had to tell your children that they can’t have the cereal they like because now you can’t even afford that.
Just wait till they get there hands on the social security that we have been paying all these years. In my case over 40 and all of a sudden bye bye its gone.
Both Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) and Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R) have jobs so that is good enough for them. The jobless paid their wages when they were working
Shoot that’s nothing Rick Perry & most Republican states put their Injured workers on Social Security & Medicare ,,that’s why the Social Security & Medicare funds are in trouble been going on in Texas & Floriday since the Bush Year’s I know I am a 40 year Union man that was injured and reported dead ,,no help from workers Comp insurance ,,If Rick Perry gets in in which he will if the Democrats don’t put another canidate in the Unions will be gone he has sworn to that !!
Social Security funding is not in trouble, it is the removal of those TRUST funds THREE TIMES by Congress to spend those Social Security funds on deficit spending through the Treasury general fund !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
True but the republican Governors have been cheating SS & medicare for about since 1992 , The Government owes SS & Medicare a few trillion dollars but the way the “FEDs keep books its going broke
I only knew vaguely about that aspect, Fishkisser, and your point is very important to include in our discussion. But with the illegal wars Goering Warcrimes Bush inflicted upon our nation, in the trillions of dollars each year of Congressionally-unapproved debt that our country is responsible for paying to the international debt financiers, it is only logical that the states would not be able to fund Social Security since federal revenue sharing with our states was drastically cut-back due to the huge expense of illegal debt our U.S. Treasury must pay.
HOWEVER, I also remember when the Repugnant Party governors all across our nation cut funding to higher education in the early 1990s, and THAT was not due to Viet Nam !!!!! So probably Social Security, as you inferred, has been a target for Repugnant Party governors to short-change! Or… ?????
I have thought about what the republican and corporate plan is for stealing the next presidential election: The republicans in Congress and /or state legislatures will not vote for anything that will help the unemployed or that would move our country forward out of this economic disaster they put us in. The corporations: “banking, oil, Wall Street, Military Industrial Complex, etc.” are sitting on TRILLIONS of dollars in their corporate accounts. They will not use any of the money to hire people BECAUSE if they did then unemployement would go down, the people would have money to spend on any and every thing wanted or needed, which would bring the economy out of this recession. The workers would then be paying taxes which would lower our deficit, which would help our economy also. Which would make President Obama look great! It would then prove to everyone with common sense that his economic plan was working! The corporates and republicans DO NOT WANT THAT – at ANY COST!! The purpose for the republican NO VOTES on everything, and the corporate sitting on the money is: to make President Obama look bad, to keep people depresed, fearfull, in debt, and pissed off and wanting to blame someone. To keep the economy in the worst shape since the Great Depression of 1929 – 1933. The republicans constantly are raging that it is all President Obama’s fault. If they can convince enough voters of that BS, and since the Supreme Court of The United States has given the status of corporations as a “PERSON”, which also gave corporations the freedom to donate unlimited funds to the person THEY want as President, then Obama is out, and the “CHOSEN” person the Repub’s and the Corporates bought and paid for is then the President. DON’T FALL FOR THIS THEFT OF OUR PRESIDENCY. Please pass this along to anyone who will listen. We can and will STOP this from happening! DON’T ALLOW THE CORPORATE TAKEOVER OF OUR ELECTIONS! We did NOT allow it in the 2008 Presidential election, WE MUST NOT ALLOW IT IN IN 2012! When Romney stated at a rally in Iowa: “corporations are people, too” – and then argued with the voters who disagreed with him….I was then Convinced of what I have stated above. Romney, Perry, Bachman, Palin…..they are all fighting to be the “CHOSEN” person of the Republican Party and the Corporate CEO’s, NOT the person chosen by the PEOPLE of this country.
I turned down helping cancer victims. That doesn’t mean I don’t care about them. You can’t give money to people that you don’t have. The deficit government spending has got to stop IMMEDIATELY. Have we not learned our lesson yet after the last fiscal crisis or are we just going to keep spending money we don’t have? People and governments who spend more money then they take in go bankrupt. This has got to stop.
They are at it again! Where is Walker and what about those Senators that were recalled, what’s their names?
Lets have fun with Kasich and Walker and watch Perry run.
How about we close some loopholes, raise some taxes, create some jobs, help our unemployed, and impeach a couple of Governors and ask Texas to realy get their house in order and get a Governor that respects the people of the USA and I mean all the people.
It is the American way!
If there is 1 rich American on the field of economic battle he will help to carry his/her fellow Ameican to safety, this is who we are!
We have faltered but we will not fail and we will never turn on each other in the face of the enemy.
This is who we are, it,s what we do.
Lets get busy. Let’s get to work!!!

Rick Perry as governor is testimony to the large number of ignorant Americans that live in Texas. Why don’t Texans recall him? Same goes for Kaish! Both of them are really just whores for billionaire tea baggers. Both were most likely helped by electronic voting machine fraud. Even so, elections are of no use if the candidates don’t offer something of value to voters. Too many conservatives are ignorant of the fact that the republicans are the ones who have ruined the budget and the economy not the other way around. Republicans are the biggest spenders on the most worthless projects. We need to stop the wars that we were lied into by Bush and his criminal mafia. We need to show how he lied us into the war and then make him responsible for the debt! That’s what courts are for so the Obama administration should be suing him. The Bush empire can afford it! Why anyone would listen to the republicans on budgetary matters is sheer insanity. To understand their total perverting of the budget crisis you must first realize that social security and the budget are two different things that can’t be merged into one! Social security is funded by a separate tax and is a trust fund not related to the national budget. Republicans are trying to conflate the two so as to rob us of of what we are entitled to. It would be tantamount to a tax increase of 18% on the poor. If you work for a living and support the republican party you are a fool!
They don’t call the Dallas-Fort Worth area the “Bible belt” for nothing, they’ll believe anything the Repugnicans vomit.
