N.H. House Sustains Veto of So-Called Right to Work

by Mike Hall, Nov 30, 2011

After months of dirty-trick-maneuvering, New Hampshire House Speaker William O’Brien (R) got his comeuppance this morning when the House failed to override Gov. John Lynch’s (D) May veto of a so-called right to work bill. The 240 to 139 vote in the heavily Republican chamber failed to get the two-thirds necessary for an override.

Since May, O’Brien has scheduled then delayed votes multiple times and tried to hold surprise legislative sessions, all in an effort to catch Democrats and Republicans who supported the veto off guard and unable to attend and cast their votes.

New Hampshire AFL-CIO President Mark MacKenzie says today’s vote is a:

clear signal to all of our elected leaders, in New Hampshire and elsewhere, that attacking the rights of everyday Americans isn’t the key to economic prosperity.

If we study our history. The very first on the agenda of a Fascist take over of a Democratic government is to destroy labor unions. Need proof ? Look at 1933 when Germany ceased to be a Democracy when the Nazi party took over. The very first laws inacted was to destroy all labor protection laws and unions. In fact all the union leaders were the first to go to prison or concentration camps in Germany after Hitlers Coup D’etat.

Oh yes you are 100% right. Good Post Mike.

Sometimes Right-To-Get-Screwed laws do get put in the trash like they should be. But, “they” will keep coming back hoping to succeed if at first “they” The Establishment does not succeed in getting it passed, and to hell with Democracy, in The Establishment’s view point.

How on God’s green earth does a state “right to work law” – which, by it’s very nature, only promotes the exercise of individual freedom when it comes choosing to belong to a union – lead to the “destruction” of unions?

That said, I’d recommend that those who suggested “we study our history” ACTUALLY DO SO…. and take a look back at what REALLY happened when the Nazi’s took power. They just didn’t “destroy all labor protection laws and unions”; rather, they FORCED individuals to join “unions” which they did NOT want to belong to….in a far-too-similar manner to the way many labor “unions” in this country already behave today.

If unions want to thrive in today’s global economy, then they’re going to have to learn how do so on a VOLUNTARY basis, without COERCING workers to “join” them. Unfortunately, the way they’re going about things now only serves to alienate those who they most desire to be in “union” with.

It’s quite simple really. First you convince workers in a union that htey don’t need the union. They will be paid the same, the union will still have to bargain for them and represent them, but the union will not be getting their dues to finance those operations. If you weaken the treasury of the union enough they may fold. And, if you can get enough workers to believe your b.s. you may have them decertify the union. That is when the rattler strikes. Once union free of the union the company will reduce wages, benefits and hire and fire at whim. If you had one ounce of common sense you would not have asked that queston.

What a bunch of pro-corporate propaganda, KenM !!!!

You are an anti-labor infiltrator from The Establishment, clearly evidenced by your repeated attacks on logic and intelligence that common workers have. Do you really think your stupidity is not obvious to REAL union workers ??? How stupid of you!

I am a member of the SHEETMETAL WORKERS LOCAL UNION #25 FOR OVER 50 YEARS. No time have I ever heard or seen anyone FORCED to join a union. If you wanted to work within the union YES you had to join, serve your app. and the after 4 or 5 years depending on which program your local was under. You were then a full member, with all benifits etc.I am now retired and live a very good life because of the pension and benifits I EARNED.

This is a very big victory for the unions but we must stay vigilant!! The republicans are going to keep attacking us. They are trying to get a simialr law passed in Indiana. We must keep fighting these union busting laws!!

I mean similar law. I should use spell check. sorry.

  7. dbpocean on 30.11.2011 at 17:55 (Reply)

Right to work really means “The Right for Corporations to disregard Labor Laws, cut wages, cut benefits, and ignore Labor Contracts and hire cheap labor. Globalization has been corporate America’s way of disregarding Child Labor Laws and environmental protections. Koch sucker Brothers have actually created a think tank of lobbiest claiming that smog is good for you. Imagine if they win and control the Country. Working people are dead. That will be the end of Life as we know it.

  8. Keith Mathews on 30.11.2011 at 17:55 (Reply)

I think unions should follow the example of the AARP, and offer a general union status to folks who are unaffiliated for a small annual dues rate of, say, $15.00.
This would provide a way to join without having to organize an entire office or factory. It would make union members of folks whose companies have successfully blocked a union shop from being set up, like Walmart and other large concerns.
Once a majority of folks have joined through this program, then the union would have a majority ready to unionize a shop before the campaign even begins. The union would have information already on people’s feelings toward the union to use against any corporate blowback to efforts to unionize.

    1. Mr Libris Fidelis on 30.11.2011 at 21:01 (Reply)

Yeah, but they find that stuff out, Keith. Like I posted previously, the tactics the management and home office uses against employees is clearly demonstrated in “Wal-Mart: The High Cost Of Low Prices. It’s all in how the managers DETECT union-favoring employees to fire them, how the managers PREVENT union-favoring applicants from being hired in the first place, and just a few of all of the trait-identification tactics called “profiling” that can get an employee fired for merely APPEARING to resemble a stereotypical union-sympathising employee.

I don’t know if you read my previous post about the law-suits against JUST Mal-Wart, not to mention other corporations who urinate on their employees, but also of their tactics once they get caught! It’s worse than a conspiracy, it’s a corporate crime syndicate no differnt than the mafia, and I am not exaggerating!

And they falsely claim that unions are a conspiracy! History says otherwise, as so many of our group have witnessed to us in this AFL-CIO Now News Blog so many times now !!!!

Well Ken that sounds like it makes sence. But nothing could be so far from the truth. First of all as many have posted on this very good sight. You MUST know union history. 1947 Taft-Hartley is when this right to work for less took hold. The great President give them hell Harry S Truman vetoed this and we all know old Harry could not be bought. He knew this was bad law. But a Republican House and Senate over-road the President and it went into law. I would say the very worst law ever written. But the law go’s back a lot farther. After the Civil War and things had started to return to normal if it ever did. The blacks now were free to form a Union. Well you know in the south and even in the north that did not go over well. So this what is now called Right to Work was in not so many words was and is today a ploy to keep Unions out. You ask how? Well say there is a election 60% want the Union 40% do not want to union. Well in any election 60% wins end of game. Your side lost. Well in right to work for less the 40% wins. I need not go into that.

    1. KenM on 01.12.2011 at 12:34 (Reply)

      Ol’ Harry couldn’t be bought?

Not saying all that much negative about Truman…but do suggest you read-up on his connection with Tom Pendergast and all that his crowd stood for. Think once you have, you may not be quite so quick to maintain that Truman “couldn’t be bought”

I stated in an earlier post how the Nazi’s destroyed the unions after they took over Germany in 1933. This was attempted here in the United States in 1934 shortly after FDR became president. The Wall Street Banks and coporations were so angry at FDR for creating labor laws to protect workers and unions an attempted Coup D’etat of the US Govenment was planned. It was called the “Business Plo”. The Dickstein-McCormack House Committee On UnAmerican Affairs brought this to lite. Also the book “The Plot To Seize The White House” by Jules Archer. The banks and coporations were angry SSI was also past alone with WPA,CCC and the NRA National Recovery Act also fear FDR was turning the USA into a Commie state. . The Wall Street Banks and Corporations payed a lobbiest 100 thousand dollars to go to Germany on a fact finding mission to set up the Coup D’etat. All this info is in the Library of Congress or Google.

I posted most of the following on another post. And I will keep posting it every chance I get

We need to figure out a strategy, to RETURN POWER BACK TO THE PEOPLE and REMOVE POWER FROM THE SPECIAL INTEREST & CORPORATIONS that has a strangle hold over this country and make this ounce again a democracy

We now have the OWS crowd, the unions, the web and a lot of pissed off Americans.

    1. We must point out all bills/Legislation that are anti labor, anti middle class and anti American and hold all Representatives who support or votes for them whether Democrats or republicans, accountable Do to them what they have done to most of us, make them jobless by voting them out of office.

    2. We need to make the OWS a Viable Party, much like the Tea Party did

    3. We must start pushing Legislation to remove Personhood rights from the Corporations and the Supreme Court interpretation of money being free speech.

    4. We need Legislation to stop the flow of money and gifts by the corporations and other special interests and make it Illegal to receive such by any Public Official or at least Limit the amount of any single person or corporation can give and only to a single Party source.

    5. We need Legislation to make it Illegal for any elected or appointed official to work for any corporation or person that has contributed money or other things of value (Like TV Ads) either directly or through the Party for a period of 5 years after they are removed from office We also need to push to remove the Lobbyist free access to our politicians, something the average American does not have and remove the influence they now hold over our politicians.

    6. Impose Term Limits which keeps elected or appointed official from serving more than 2 to 4 year consecutive terms. But allow them to return with a 1 to 2 year absence from politics.

    7. Tighten regulations to keep fraud and other illegal activities for example bringing back the Sherman Act & Anti Trust Laws.

    8. Make everyone pay their fair share in taxes including corporations by removing loopholes and ending corporate welfare. Also charging American based company that operates offshore a high tariff to import those good back into America.

If we do just one of the first six above, it will put fear into the politicians, any 3 above would return most of the power back to the people, all of the above would again make us a true democracy ounce more. The last two, Would help make us more prosperous again by returning jobs and manufacturing to America.

We must make them fear helping the 1% and reward them for helping the 99%

Make Politicians start wising up, it may be the 1% who gives the money to run, but it’s the 99% who actually elects them AND WE ARE NOW WATCHING THEIR ACTIONS AND WHERE THEIR LOYITY LIES

    1. mikel310 on 01.12.2011 at 17:48 (Reply)

I am sorry for the multiple postings, but have come to realize that if you say something only ounce, it is soon forgotten and if you repeat yourself many times, you might have a chance of actually being heard.

WE NEED TO GET MONEY OUT OF POLITICS!!!! THE ROOT OF ALL OF OUR PROBLEMS

They say that money can be traced to the root of most evil and that power can corrupt the best of us and will corrupt the majority, and we all know what absolute power does.

Look around you, it is money & power that now controls our politics, our institutions and our life’s, and to a large extent, so does the lack of it.

All of the old saying like, It takes money to make money, Money is power, Only the rich get richer and many others have a lot of merit, and when you can now also buy power and influence, something the 99% of us can’t do, the common person has no hope.

There was one time in this country history that a poor man, (like Abraham Lincoln) could become a elected public servant. But that is no longer the case, it is only multi millionaires who are now serving as our representatives because they are the only ones who have the money to run and not necessarily because they are the best we have available.

The big problem is how to do it. Money and power is hard to give up ounce it is obtained. Our only hope to change things is as a collective, single minded body and use the only thing we still have at our deposal at least for the time being is the power of our vote.

I really believe that if we can remove money, power, and corporate & other outside influence from our Politics, then we might have a chance to return to a government that is ounce again a reprehensive government that is By the people & For the people.

WAKE up citizens. The big business / corporate uprising is in it’s 12th year. Corps.want more than control of our Congress & Supreme Court. They want complete control of your very life and livelihood! we have seen it in the Goldman Sachs scheme ,Illegal practices in all manor of deeds and foreclosures. The BIG BIZ ploy is working because we are not fighting it. Everything from credit cards to the sneaky centralization of our Govt. taking away states rights that were inplace by our Constitution.Do a little research and it becomes clear that The Fed.Res.Bank is not only a tool of banks but one of the most clandestine treasurys in the world; taxpayers money in the hands of greddy ,incompetent legislators. The banks and Congress do not want you to know where billions of your dollars are going. Vote GOP because they froze the Congress for 4 years and are in bed with corps.and anyone making $ 250,000/ year. Why go after the retired folk when their target is Medicaid and Welfare? Do your homework and you will see that this corporate take-over is just like a well planned scheme of any dictatorship; Break the unions, let the economy crush the worker through inflation and unfair amounts of profit and percentages and weaken the rights of citizens by blowing big holes in their Bill Of Rights. Call it security or “big brother”control it is the same critter.
Don’t be another “complacent sand bobber”. Ask the questions, pester your Congressmen until you are sure that they are treating you like a mushroom. Fight back . Don’t just take it on the chin. You need a job while millions of illegals are on the Wefare train and have never put a dime into it. You are paying the way for the guy that will do your job for half of what you can afford to take while paying your bills and no longer working two jobs to make ends meet. WE The People has to mean something again! If we have to revolt to reset our government to it’s original purposes, then so be it. The masses are the only thing that rich and powerful fear. History proves that such revolts tear into their pockets and power, so I know they don’t want that. Be a patriot for your own good as well as that of those who can’t see the handwriting on the wall!
