Obama Set to Name Three to NLRB
President Obama will use recess appointments to name three new members of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), the White House announced this afternoon.
Since Jan. 1, the board has just two members and cannot carry out most business. Republican Senate leaders have said they will block any NLRB nominations in a move most regard as an attempt to shut down the NLRB. That is part of an overall strategy that has bottled up hundreds of Obama administration nominations. But with the Senate in recess, Obama is allowed to make appointments that last through the current session of Congress.
Earlier today Obama used a recess appointment to name Richard Cordray head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Says AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka:
We commend the president for exercising his constitutional authority to ensure that crucially important agencies protecting workers and consumers are not shut down by Republican obstructionism. Working families and consumers should not pay the price for political ploys that have repeatedly undercut the enforcement of rules against Wall Street abuses and the rights of working people.

Obstructionism doesn’t really capture the thrust of GOP conduct. In the case of the Board, it is surreptitious abolitionism. They don’t have the votes to repeal the Act and abolish the Board, so instead, they underfund and understaff it. De facto nullification of the Act.
The GOP knows that when the Board is understaffed that Board case input and output declines, ULP charges and objectionable conduct complaints are heard slower, reducing the Board’s deterrent effect, thereby increasing the chilling effect of already widespread illegal conduct. They know justice delayed is justice denied.
They yap about government waste, but they wasted millions of taxpayer dollars when their understaffing of the Board forced the rehearing and revisitation of years of cases heard by Schaumber and Liebman.
There is one way to teach the GOP to stop this. When the GOP obstructs, the President should dump the convention of nominating packages with nominees from both parties and make all the recess appointments labor friendly Democrats.
Not only that, drghs, but when the Repugnant mafia cult castrates boards and acts of legistlation, without eliminating it entirely, after they have done their dirty work to destroy the board and legislation effectiveness they can STILL say “Hey, what are ya complainin’ about, you still have the board and legislation” without saying they also were resonsible for castrating the board and legislation effects!
I see no apparent reason why the democrat president would consider any republican for appointment. What he should do is put a bounty on prosecuting war criminals ( republicans and democrats ) until all are executed.Their is not one who is innocent , now that would be sending a message that would be good for America.
He is already that. The result is that unemployment stays high. How does that help labor?
Funny how how the outlook differs between what’s happening in the U.S. Senate and what’s going on currently in the Indiana legislature….or in Wisconsin in months past. And just what was President Obama’s stance on “recess” appointments when he was serving in the U.S. Senate under a Republican presidency?
What’s the matter? What’s good for the goose isn’t good for the gander? Seems to me a lot of people here are talking out of both sides of their mouths.
And people wonder why the “union” movement lacks credibility. Big mystery, isn’t it?
Corporations have organized the GOP and a lot of democrats and they are setting the agenda for all local and federal legislation. They just met in Arizona last week to map out their attack strategy for 2012. Just think that a lot of USA citizens still deny that they at war.
KenM has the facts wrong especially when claiming the union movement lacks credibility while at the same time mentioning Wisconson and Indiana which should be an eye opener to KimM that unions are strong, not weak. Unions have much support and credibility among working class people which continues to be demonstrated around the country and especially in those states and KimM should realize working people make up the majority of all people in every respect.
Exceptional times call for exceptional remedies. There is no parallel to the current wide-ranging governmental paralysis caused by the Repugnicants. I applaud the President for showing some steel and using his powers to continue to conduct government business in the face of such hellish opposition.
It is strange that Obama has the right to detain anyone for no reason and hold them indefinitely but he can not arrest the war criminals. Maybe it is because he is one himself?
During the bush years the nlrb wouldn’t even hear the cases brought foreward. This is a plus for all working middle classo
GREAT-THREE MORE CROOKED CRONY “CZARS” WE HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT! AND OBAMA BYPASSED CONGRESS—AGAIN—IN ORDER TO APPOINT THEM!
A DICTATOR CAN ONLY BECOME A DICTATOR THROUGH OUR APATHY!
IF YOU DON’T HAVE A BRAIN TO THINK FOR YOURSELF, OBAMA AND HIS CZARS WILL DO IT FOR YOU, ONLY YOU WILL NOT LIKE THE RESULT!
You know what is happening. Good point. He wants to be a dictator.
Honest1in Va, is a void of any honesty in his/herremarks from what I see. Where was Honest1in VA all during the eight years Bush ran the White House? Labor was represented in the NLRB by union hating Republican Senator Mitch Mc Connell’s wife for God sake and an she was rather open in her distast for organized labor and the working class in general. Look around the real world man and get a life.
I will tell you who the Czars are here in this country! The last administration that took is down the wrong road and almost bankrupted the country. How about the Koch brothers who are running this anti-union campaigns. You must get your information from a very unfair and unbalanced news organization. Obama has done more to fix this country in the last four years than the last administration ever did. Go back to the tea beggars.
R E A L L Y!!! The Senate is not in recess. The Senate now maintains, except during an election, an ongoing formal session to prevent recess appointments. Who started that? The Democratic Congress to prevent Bush from continuing to make recess appointments.
Keep in mind that the Senate, the Senate confirms appointments and the Senate is controlled by the Democrats. PLEASE, for the love of our working class brethren, stop running cover for this lunatic OBAMA. He as just authorized, through the Defense Authorization Bill, the arrest and detaining of American Citizens indefinitely, without trial, without due process. Who are the alleged right wing, neo-cons exposing and opposing this? THE ACLU, FIREDOGLAKE, and dozens of pro-labor progressive organizations.
While you guys keep whining about the Republicans, we have gotten over 50 congressman to back legislation for Glass-Steagall, but it isn’t moving because Obama opposes it. OBAMA!
You guys are like a bunch of abused wives, who keep blaming other people as the reason why their husband cheats on them and then beats them.
It’s really quite pathetic.
Uawproud;
Increasingly, it looks like what Obama has done to “fix this country” is on par with what Hugo Chavez has done to “fix” his country. More and more, Obama seems bent on some type of Bolivarian/Venezuelan form of “democracy” in which he buys the votes of those who provide the least sustenance to the country while alienating those who keep the country going…driving capital out, while placing the country as a whole in an ever-tightening downward spiral.
Common law or personal integrity seems to mean little to Obama (again, see his stance on similar “recess appointments” when he was in Congress, or the statements he’s made about illegal aliens and defense of marriage). Maybe the bulk of American society is ready to accept what amounts to a form of monarchy.
In any case, there’s no doubt the “gimme, gimme” crowd eats it up….but I don’t think they’ve looked beyond the immediate gratification of “getting” something in comparison to the long-term consequences of destroying the country’s economic base.
‘Course, “the masses” in Venezuela still support Clown Hugo, in spite of just as clear, if not clearer, evidence down there. I’d just like to think that our country was better than that.
Tme will tell, I guess.
This is “EXACTLY” the type of changes required to try to banlance the power of American Labor. It’s funny how I was just thinking about this as to why Obama hasn’t changed appointments to help the Unions. And, then here it is! The Bush’s and Chaney did everything to ruin this board to favor Big Business. Chaney (Satan himself) now has “fracturing” for gas ready to be implemented in New York State, PA, which may ruin our water supplies and poison our lands. Just like he did with Haliburton out west. Did you see HBO’s “Gasland”…a disgrace to our principles in ruining people’s lives and livlihood by demonstrating government as its worst. Now we have to see if the NLRB will act in accordance to its mandates, and not be a sham organization!
Excellent interpretation!
