Calif. Carwashes Agree to $1 Million Back Pay Settlement

Photo credit: CLEAN Car Wash CampaignEight California carwashes agreed to a historic $1 million settlement with the state’s attorney general for routinely failing to pay minimum wage or overtime, creating false records of work hours and not paying money owed to employees who quit, according to Attorney General Kamala Harris.

Workers at these car washes were taken advantage of by unscrupulous employers who illegally denied them the pay and benefits they earned. I am pleased that the resolution of this case will allow workers to receive the pay they are owed.

At least $800,000 of the settlement will go to workers who were underpaid, according to court records. Other parts of the settlement will pay taxes and penalties. Click here for a copy of the settlement agreement.

Two of the washes in the agreement are Bonus Car Wash in Santa Monica and Marina Car Wash in Venice, where workers fought and won recognition with United Steelworkers (USW) Local 675 last year. Says Local 75′s Dave Campbell:

We are glad that the Attorney General is taking seriously the issue of wage theft among car wash workers. Workers have been waiting to be made whole for past violations for years.

The workers there and at other Southern California carwashes came together in the CLEAN Carwash Campaign to fight for their rights. The CLEAN Carwash Campaign is a coalition supported by the USW, the AFL-CIO and more than 100 community, faith and labor organizations in Los Angeles. For more information, click here.

This seems like it SHOULD have been a criminal investigation, rather than a regulatory fine!

This is a prime example of how commerce “gets of the hook”, whereas a person would go to jail for such criminal embezzlement, which is what would have happened if a carwash employee had done the same thing in reverse!

This is like these corporations paying a several-million-dollar fine “without admitting guilt”, when they should have put the CEOs and directors in prison! And this is why mining disasters continue to happen and why we have staged-financial crises and investment scams by investment companies.

unionbrat…No doubt the sob’s are RepigliKKKons. Bet they belong to the CHAMBER OF COMMUNIST. Hell they’d push their crippled granny around in a wheel barrow and prostitue her out if it meant a dollar in their pocket. What’s happened here is exactly why the Douche Baggers and Repigs are so dead set against labor unions. These sob’s have less of a chance to cheat and rob their workers if they’re with a union.

John… would you PLEASE quit making me laugh with your un-corrupted accurate emellishments of the truth? We already know how suck-ass they are, you don’t have to be so expressively appropriate in your representations!

      I know… “embellishments” is spelled with a “b”!

maybe now some of the Attorney Generals from other states can look at walmart for not paying correct wages….

The correct term is “illegally cheating”, not the terminology for “not paying correct” wages.
