Indiana: 20,000 Signed Postcards Say No Way to RTW

AFL-CIO Field Communications staffer Cathy Sherwin sends us this report.

In their campaign to rush through so-called right to work (RTW) legislation, Indiana Republican leaders, including Gov. Mitch Daniels, have claimed they have public support. Wrong.

Polls show that the public overwhelmingly wants to see legislators slow down on “right to work” for less legislation, or let the people decide directly.

At worksites and around kitchen tables, at the Statehouse and door to door throughout Indiana, Hoosier workers have been speaking out and taking action against this anti-worker bill. Tens of thousands of workers have signed postcards now being hand-delivered to legislators urging a vote against RTW.

Today in Indianapolis, union members are at the Statehouse, putting 20,000
signed postcards and petitions in the hands of elected officials—Republicans
and Democrats. United Steelworkers (USW) member Kelly Hugunin, one of many working every day to raise awareness on the job and in the community, says public opinion is with working Hoosiers.

Everywhere we go, people are happy to sign. Union or not, working people want to stop this attack on middle-class jobs.

Members of unions have been helping out with collecting and delivering postcards  to Indiana state representatives. The state House is expected to vote on key amendments today, including one that would put the RTW bill in the hands of Indiana voters.

Unions involved include: AFSCME, AWIU, CWA, GMP, IAM, IBB, IBEW, IFT, Ironworkers, IUOE, IUPAT, LIUNA, OPEIU, SMWIA, UA, UAW, UBC, UFCW, UMWA, USW and Workers United.

Mr Fidelis how are you today my friend, again you are spot on with your comment.

I have stated here before my dislike for president Obama, but one thing i will point out at the beginning is as of this moment we have nobody else to vote for.I am in total agreement with you when you call for Jesse Jackson JR because he is a real democrat.

I am working on a lot of issues these day’s and one of them is the numbers our so called new agencies like to quote, well here are a few i can say with out doubt are correct.

Independent’s and moderates 68% are now leaning democrat
64% of seniors are leaning democrat
66% of hispanic are leaning democrat
The democrats are leading by 20% with people under the age of 45

This in no way means a democrat is a shoe in,and trust me this election will be close in my book but i hate to be the bearer of bad news for republicans but it sure does not look good.

The reason you will win is because most of the groups you mention get some kind of government check. Its called dependence on government.

      1. DLee4144 on 18.01.2012 at 12:56 (Reply)

First only one of those groups is “most” getting government checks. That’s seniors. And we get government checks for the same reason that anyone who has invested gets a check. We paid into SS for all the years we worked, and not only are we only getting back money that we paid in, but the government has raided that fund to pay for other things over the years. So, if anything we are not being supported by the government- we have supported the government. Social Security would be made totally solvent by one simple move– scrap the cap. Now, payroll taxes are only paid on the first $106,000 of income. If all income was taxed, Social Security would be fully funded forever.
But, having a government you can depend on when you need it is not a bad thing. What other point is there in having a government at all?

Big deal. Don’t they have a right to work and raise a family. Wake up man and just don’t think it is all Me-Me-Me. Use some common sence.

…To ” Hot Commodities “: We have to believe that ” patronage “,
has made its ” debut ” in American Society, recently. Our collected
IOU’s amount to, near fifteen trillion dollars. Have you been taking guests to luxury restaurants, because most of us haven’t? Us dependents, are ” hand to mouth “, when some ” vultures ” don’t
make it worse, by debunking ” homeless ” welfare recipients!
When we spend to lift up some government agency that’s providing
employment, like the ” Decennial Census “, or the U. S. Post Office,
during their Christmas ” package rush “, for instance, we’re helping
selected employees, who meet employment criteria, as well as security background checks. When we lift-up entities like Halliburton, and
the public lands re-development ” a-la Donald Trump “, we’re narrowing our options for future use of the Public treasure, therefore,
don’t begrudge us our ” doles “, which existed in Imperial; Rome

to chapellier: stop listening to right wing nut jobs,i worked for 45yrs. and collect s.s.,15trilion debt was mostly incurred by the last texas ass,by starting wars that were not necessary.all we should of done is take ben laden out,and leave that afgan. sewer. also he passed perscription drug bill on the cuff, also the first time in american history he cut taxes for the so called job creators.

    2. LibrisFidelis on 19.01.2012 at 11:26 (Reply)

Chapellier is obviously a Repugnant Party mafia cult member, he is conveniently leaving out the fact that the Afghanistan-Iraq wars have cost our nation $30-Trillion in illegal under-the-table debt that is financed by Global financiers at interest which Goering Warcrimes Bush fanatically but conspiratorially arranged for. But that is only one debt the Repugnant mafia cult Party has put us in to !!!!!

HEY hc, you blinkin fool, what’s your problem? I am one of those “dependent” on the government. I worked 45 years for that “dependence”. I saved a little but I still work part-time. I still pay into SS. My payments from the the government do not go up any even t hough I am stillpaying more into SS. Howeve, my contribution may someday help LibrisFidelis along in his SS in his old age. I have my hopes for you but won’t say what t hey are.

silver fox i agree with you 100% i look at it we should always look to make s.s&medicare stronger by having the 1% pay their fair share and we should only vote for people that look out for average tax payer.
