Breaking: Indiana House Passes RTW
Moments ago, the Indiana state House passed a “right to work” for less bill by 55 to 41. The issue now moves to the state Senate, where it’s expected to be taken up and voted on next week. The Senate previously passed a different version of the bill.
Working Hoosiers by the thousands have been rallying in opposition to “right to work” for less each day and plan to keep it up as Gov. Mitch Daniels and his Republican statehouse colleagues push to ram through the measure.
Indiana House Speaker Brian Bosma and Gov. Daniels have been ramming the so-called right to work bill through even after the voters have made clear that they want a public referendum on the controversial anti-worker measure. Only one-third of Indiana voters favor passing the RTW for less law and a whopping 69 percent of Hoosier voters say that the Indiana General Assembly should slow down the process to allow more debate. An overwhelming 71 percent of respondents want to give voters—not the legislature—the final say on this controversial legislation.

We should have done like in 1994. We should have had 20,000 people downtown showing force. I am so proud of everyone sticking together to fight for this, but just can’t feel like too little too late. I feel we were to disorganized during the rallies. We need to band together like Wisconsin did. Please, please people get together and fight to repeal this. Please remember to vote next election and get rid of every single person that was for this bulls&*t RTW law. If the lower and middle class would get out and vote we would not have the rich republicans in power. Please dont’ be offended by this, just get out and vote. That is the rich republicans nightmare. We must vote. Please get out and make sure everyone you know gets out and votes next election. That is the only way we will have, “Power to the People”.
Right on! People have ot to unite, protest, and vote. If any anti-democracy acts are enacted by these tools of the rich and greedy, the people should demand a referendum or a recall, or just plain vote the bums out on election day.
I totally agree with you on getting out to vote. I think alot of people have given up and can not see the difference between a repub and a dem at times. I too have a blurred vision of them at times. It is up to the dems to seperate themselves and get the message out loud and clear where they stand. You can have all the money in the world, but when it comes to voting it is the same as us (one vote) and there are more of us than them.
The GOP revels in the prospect of creating vast inequality and establishing inverted Socialism where everyone except the Plutarchists share massive debt and hardship caused by 30+ years of deregulation and irrational small government ideology, an unregulated Wall Street, deleterious tax cuts, two wars of choice, and obstructing every effort to restore health to the American economy and ending high unemployment.
Vote right-wing Republicans out of political existence.

You also have to inspect all voting tools for the republicans are known to fix thing to go their way. It has happend before and it will happen again. Im very sorry this happend to this state because it needs all the help it can get.
Most of the citizens of most states with RTW do not undersstand what the RIGHT TO WORK really is for. It is to prevent working people from negotiiating for benefits, wages and safety issues as a group. This means if a single worker has issues with the job and voices those issues they will likely get fired. That also, in most states, garantees that they will not be able to draw unemployment benefits. In those states with Right To Work laws the average worker pay and benefits are much lower than states without a Right To work law. Right To Work laws does not garantee that you will get a job. It only garantees that if you get a job it will be, on aerage, for less pay and less freedom on the job.
You are right on QUALA!!! I live in Arizona where we have a Right To Work Law written into our state constitution, and every year Arizona is in the top ten for low wages and benefits. The Republican majority in this state has managed to sell this law to the voters, a law that is a terrible assault on anyone that draws a paycheck, by demonizing the unions. What a scam!! In our state the law was written to break the back of the unions. The Republicans in our state didn’t want the unions looking over their shoulder while their wealthy supporters were importing undocumented foreign workers form Mexico to replace the more expensive American workers! I did my first report on the Arizona Right To Work Law about 30 years ago, when I was in 7th grade. My report didn’t paint a very pretty picture of this law that is nothing more than a tribute to corporate greed. My teacher was a Republican and gave me an F, even though my report was well researched, documented and fact checked. I still havn’t forgotten, laws like these are designed to turn American workers into slaves whose only purpose is to harvest the money crop of the rich. very simly, Right To Work Laws mean, lower wages, less disposable income to create consumer demand, fewer jobs, fewer businesses, fewer government services like schools, law enforcement, and health care. These laws have far reaching tentacles that shrink and deminish the middle and working class. Right To Work Laws are economy killers and job killers, not just good paying jobs but all jobs!!!
The labor movement needs to change something fast: we need to take control of the issue, and we take control by refusing to call it by that BS lie-of-a-name “right to work.”
Every time a labor leader or a union member or a politcian repeats those words, it just further cements the falsehood that it somehow protects anybody’s “right to work.”
It’s a FREE RIDER LAW. That’s what it is.
You can start pushing back against the law by pushing back against the lie: tens of millions of unemployed in Amerca know that there is no “right to work” in America. All that law does is give peple a FEE RIDE on the Union dime.
Wake up people, 37 Republican governors across the country have attacked public unions, now you have Indiana creating another right to work for less state! The GOP’s war on unions is in full swing! We need to vote them out this fall, before it’s too late for all of us!

Well that’s a fine how-do-you-do. Get their names, districts, and
anything else you can on them and remember them in November.
Indiana just invited in corporate serfdom. The corporations will be
extremely happy, especially the royal CEOs who will make even
more. Indiana just took a giant step toward Third World status.
The royalist governor in Ohio and the State General Assembly
had their surprise last election day when Ohio’s Issue 2 went
down in flaming defeat. The people voted to repeal the hated
Senate Bill 5 which eseentially would have gotten rid of public
unions. The writing was on the wall for private sector unions as
well. They will be remembered in November. You in Indiana have
to do the same. Get organized, circulate petitions to overturn that
law and get it on the ballot as well. You’ve got to take back your
state for decency’s & fairness’s sake.
Just as I have said. There are to many dumb farmers, way to many Republicans, way to many business that have convinced there workers that Unions are the root of all evil in America. There for I must say the workers and all the people of the state of Indiana will get just what they want. Each state that inacts this law just puts another kill on one of the Americas great right’s. Not long from now Unions will just be another foot note in history. Dam sad!
If there was a level playing field the American worker could compete. As long as BOTH parties keep on passing these “free trade” bills our manufacturing base will never recover. American workers will do what they have to do to compete. Look at GM, look at Ford. Unions created the middle class and want to preserve it. I believe alot of this RTW and public employee stuff is a side show. It has to be done on a federal level. American workers want and deserve good jobs at a fair wage with decent benifits. If our trading “partners” don’t want to do the same with their workers, it is their problem not ours.
I agree with you all very much!! we really need to jump on this anti union ,repig , invasion!! it’s gonna be really tough because there are so many brainwashed people in ths country!! I live in Virginia which has had this rtw crap forever!! non union people working at union companies , not paying any dues, crossing pickett lines, etc….but they accept the pay they get!!! DUH!!!!!! by the time these greedy bastards get done union busting, they’ll see, there won’t be any good pay!!!! and it’ll be their own faults for letting this crap continue to grow and grow!!!
I just wish Pres. Obama would say, enough is enough and stop all this degrading rtw stuff! but then I guess that’s what all this states rights crap is all about and it’d be hell to pay if he tried to over ride these repig crap holes!!! any thoughts???
I don’t understand how any state in the Union can control such important matters without the whole states vote. This is a bunch of pant waist dictators ruling the state with an iron glove. Heads should be rolling. this is simply not Democratic. The Constititution does not apply in Indiana? government for the people ,by the peole is a sad myth in this state. Who gave any of the miscreants the right to overide fair bargainig and thw will of the people. You guys gotta “clean house at election time and get the bylaws updated to fit the rights of the majority.
I live in Salt Lake City, We have been RTW since 1950, RTW allows to abuse workers, Wages will be 3 to 5 $$ lower, In time you will see the damage it will do. Wake up people.
Well put mitty. Yes Utah big time right to work for less state. How much does the Mormon church have to do with it?
Thanks
I traveled to Indiana to rally with the workers there Tuesday. We made quite a ruckus outside the chamber where the pols were gathered. I suggest we stop using their language.
RTW = Repress The Wages plain and simple!!!
Spread that message. No state with these laws in place has wages that meet the national average…..and the roads in Indiana were deplorable Gov Daniels…..do your job!
KBat, you’ve given the best description of RTW I’ve seen so far. Kudos to ya !
with the republicans it’s like putting a fox in the hen house they’ll have chicken every time stop voting for these people who don’t have your interest they don’t have a clue about working people
Very will put retiredcop. You are so right but I don’t think this manufacturing thing will stop till Americans start to work for $2.00 or $3.00 pre hour. It is called capitalism. Make the American worker compeat against his fellow worker. Then watch the bosses set back and laugh.
As several contributors have said, the people’s voice must be heard-citizens, that means you need to VOTE!! While voter stats have improved lately, every eligible voter needs to be responsible for the destiny of their state, their country-don’t make excuses, just get to the booth!!
I am from Louisiana a state that voted in RTW in the early 70 because we as voters said it couldnt happen but it did and our wages havent recovered yet. The Louisiana worker went from $18.00 to $21.00 dollars an hour to $10.75. Thats a savings of 8-10 dollars an hour for the repubilcans assholes do you think they are going to drop the hourly wage that they (contractors) charge. WHY certainly NOT. RTW is the worst thing that ever happened to Louisiana dont make the same mistake Indiana your economy and family cant take a hit of the magnitude. FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHT leave the RATS in the barn where they belong.
The problem comes from the process called “Double-Speak” which was derived from George Orwell’s book 1984, which was published in 1948/1949.
When The Establishment “coins” a word like Right To Work, people are so seduced by the APPEARANCE of the concept rather than becoming alert to the MEANING of the concept, because everyone who is unemployed or who is dissatisfied with their current employment wants a job, correct?
But the truth about those three words is that the CONCEPT is a concealment that the RIGHT is with the EMPLOYER and the work is for the CHOSEN FEW who will accept that employment regardless of the reality of that conditions for that employment !!!
“Hey, I need a job, I don’t care if it’s a bad job, I need a job!” How many time have we seen that mentality in action ???
Wikipedia: Doublespeak is language that deliberately disguises, distorts, or reverses the meaning of words. Doublespeak may take the form of euphemisms (e.g., “downsizing” for layoffs), making the truth less unpleasant, without denying its nature. It may also be deployed as intentional ambiguity, or reversal of meaning (for example, naming a state of war “peace”). In such cases, doublespeak disguises the nature of the truth, producing a communication bypass.
All this started with the Taft-Hartley law passed in 1947 under a Republican controlled House. It was vetoed by Truman, but Congress overrode his veto and passed it into law. All the years that the Dems controlled the House why wasn’t it repealed? No one has answered that one.
The other point I would like to make is that the Unions of this country band together and form a super pac, if you will, to fund ads explaing the Taft-hartley law, which most don’t know about, and what it does. Like if 51% of workers in a company votes to become unionized, then only those people will have to pay dues but all of them get the same pay and benefits. This pits worker against worker and destroys the unions. Why should 1 guy pay dues and 2 guys get the benefits? Pretty soon no one wants to pay the dues, so we all lose. Right to work (for less) states earn over $5K less per year, have less health care benefits, if any, and so on. Even their health is worse due to lack of health care insurance coverage and the list goes on. Union busting is big business in this country and has been for a number of years. All because the corporations want more profits. Oh yes, some will bring back jobs, but do we want to return to the years of sweatshops? Anyone remember the women’s clothing factory that burned down with 100 women locked inside it and they burned to death? This happened back in the 1960′s. These are the kinds of things the Unions need to get out to the people. I will gladly donate to any fund to accomplish this. Will you?
