Multiple, State of California: Fourteen unions representing 230,000 state workers in California sent a joint letter to the State Senate and State Assembly, urging members to block a possible attempt by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to impose the federal minimum wage on state workers. The governor has threatened to cut state worker pay to the minimum wage should the Senate and Assembly not pass the state budget.

NFLPA, NFL: Saints quarterback Drew Brees spoke out on behalf of the NFL Players Association (NFLPA), articulating the concern about a case before the U.S. Supreme Court. In American Needle v. the NFL, the Supreme Court will decide whether the 32 NFL teams act as a single entity, a decision that could make it exempt from anti-trust laws and have a significant impact on the rights of players as well as the cost of tickets and merchandise. The NFLPA is currently in negotiations with the NFL on a new contract, and the threat of a lockout looms for the 2011 season.
UNITEHERE!, Kaiser Permanente: UNITEHERE Local 5 will hold a “limited duration strike” at Honolulu’s Kaiser Permanente clinic, beginning Jan. 19 and lasting no more than two days. Local 5 hopes to block Kaiser from subcontracting workers’ jobs.

AFT, Detroit Public Schools: The Detroit Federation of Teachers (AFT) reached a tentative agreement last week on a three-year contract with Detroit Public Schools. The 7,000 teachers will receive a 1 percent wage increase in the third year of the contract, which runs through June 2012. Employees may be eligible for an additional 2 percent increase, depending on school enrollment and state aid.
ATU, Rhode Island Public Transit Authority: In Rhode Island, the state legislature is considering legislation to remove binding arbitration at the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority. Members of Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 618 have been without a contract since June and say they would issue a strike notice if the binding arbitration provision is removed.

NEGOTIATIONS
TWU, SEPTA: The six-day strike by Philadelphia transit workers is over. Transport Workers (TWU) Local 234 and Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) reached a tentative agreement early this morning, in time to get trains and buses running for the morning commute. A ratification vote by TWU’s 5,100 members will be held in the next 10 days.
