Workers across the globe are demanding that Russian authorities investigate recent attacks on union leaders in that country. The latest attack came Feb. 8 when Evgeny Ivanov was struck several times by one or more unknown assailants as he was leaving his apartment in St. Petersburg.
The attack came only weeks after a new local union, headed by Ivanov, was formed at a St. Petersburg General Motors auto plant. This is the second assault in two months on a Russian auto union leader. Watch video of the news report on the attack. Translation by the AFL-CIO Solidarity Center.)
Despite being injured and bruised, Ivanov continues to fight unfair management practices at the plant, including a proposed shift to a three-day workweek and a wage structure that provides more than 50 percent of workers’ earnings as bonuses that managers can threaten to withdraw if workers show signs of, say, joining a union.
