Report: Why Employee Free Choice Matters to Small Business

by Seth Michaels, Aug 26, 2009

Small businesses employ millions across the country, and they depend upon a strong economy—a thriving middle class, with prosperity and purchasing power broadly shared. That’s why the Employee Free Choice Act—despite corporate spin—will help, not hurt, small businesses.

In a report, American Rights at Work details how the legislation will assist small businesses in thriving and prospering, as well as the communities on which they rely. According to the report:

The legislation will give back to small businesses the freedom to compete based on innovation and quality, instead of who can afford the most expensive anti-union consultants. In this economic crisis, the nation has a duty to enable entrepreneurs and start-up companies to focus on building sustainable, long-term success, instead of being forced to compete against irresponsible businesses in an unwinnable, low-wage race to the bottom.

Health Care Reform Will Benefit Small Business, Produce Big Savings

by Mike Hall, Jul 30, 2009

Two studies by the Economic Policy Institute (EPI) find that the House health care reform bill (H.R. 3200) would pay dividends for small businesses and other groups, and costs incurred by the federal government would help reduce total health spending over time.

Health Care Reform—Big Benefits for Small Business” explains the many ways in which small businesses will benefit from health care reforms. Only 35 percent of businesses employing fewer than 10 workers offer health insurance, and those that do usually pass on a higher share of the cost to workers than do larger businesses, the report says.

A key problem is that small businesses typically pay more for health insurance because of the way policies are sold. Reforms that would create more competition among insurers and reduce their administrative costs “would significantly reduce the cost small businesses incur providing health insurance,” EPI said.

Small Biz Group Says Health Care Reform Could Save Them $855 Billion

by Mike Hall, Jun 11, 2009

Health care reform that requires employers to provide health care coverage for workers or pay into a fund—known as pay or play—could save small businesses as much as $855 billion during the next few years.

A new study by the Small Business Majority disproves claims by health care reform opponents that  requiring businesses to provide coverage to their workers would destroy their bottom line.

The Economic Impact of Health Care reform on Small Business, written by Massachusetts Institute of Technology economics professor Jonathan Gruber, says that small businesses, more than any other sector of the economy, “suffer from our broken health care system.”

From spiraling premiums to inadequate access to health care for themselves and their employees, small business owners have seen their prospects for growth diminished and their profits slashed by today’s patchwork of inefficient health care options.

Small Business Owners: Employee Free Choice Good for Our Workers and Us

by Seth Michaels, Mar 23, 2009

Corporate leaders are making a lot of unfounded claims that the Employee Free Choice Act would be bad for small businesses. But when you ask many small business owners and entrepreneurs across the country, you’ll hear a different story. They understand the Employee Free Choice Act will help create a stronger economy, with a better-trained workforce and a more economically stable customer base.

During a conference call today hosted by the worker advocacy group American Rights at Work, some of these small business owners spoke up to explain why they support the Employee Free Choice Act.

Ruth Schepp is a business owner in West Fargo, N.D., who employs six people and sees their membership in the Machinists (IAM) union as a way to cooperate with them to build a stronger firm.

Survey: Will Small Business Owners Support Health Care Reform this Time?

by Mike Hall, Jan 27, 2009

As part of our series looking at health care reform proposals and initiatives from a range of groups and experts, today we take a look at the small business community.

In the early 1990s, when President Clinton launched his ambitious campaign for comprehensive health care reform, it was the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) that struck the sharpest knife into the reform initiative.
