Union Sportsmen: Dedicated Funding Needed to Safeguard Fish and Wildlife

Union sportsmen see firsthand how climate change has harmed the woods, streams and lakes, even as the rest of us are aware of the planet heating up from reports of shrinking ice shelves to holes in the Earth’s ozone layer.
In a letter to congressional leaders from 20 of the unions in the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership (TRCP) and the Union Sportsmen Alliance (USA), the unions write:
Union sportsmen do not need to read reports in the press to know climate change is already affecting the ways they pursue game and fish, the success of their days afield and the timing of their hunting and fishing trips.
The 20 unions urge the leaders of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee to include dedicated funding to safeguard fish, wildlife and ecosystems important to sportsmen be in Senate climate change legislation.

If you are a member of the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance (USA), there may be a brand-new Chevy truck and a finely crafted, made-in-America Beretta shotgun in your future. All USA members are automatically entered in the upcoming drawing for the truck. To take part in the contest for the Beretta, union sportsmen must submit a good hunting and fishing tale.
The drawing for the 2009 Silverado will be on or about July 2 and all USA members are eligible. The deadline for joining USA is June 30. For contest details, click here.

Big news out of the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance (USA). Last month, the group welcomed its 10,000th member. Launched in 2007, the USA is a joint venture of the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership (TRCP) and 22 unions. The nonpolitical hunting and fishing club is open to union members, retirees and their families.
Martin Reier, a member of Electrical Workers Local 242 from Duluth, Minn., is the USA’s 10,000th member. As a special recognition, Reier received a U.S.-made Beretta 3901 American Citizen shotgun with the USA logo on the receiver. Reier says he learned about the USA at one of his local meetings and was eager to join a club supported by his union.
Once I heard about the USA and all they had to offer, I was ready to sign-up. I think it’s very important for hunters and anglers to belong to organizations, like the USA, that are working to protect their hunting and fishing heritage.

The coalition of union members and environmental groups is growing stronger as both groups push for green jobs and organizations like the Sierra Club and the Natural Resources Defense Council join the drive to pass the Employee Free Choice Act. Now you can add another group to the mix—the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance (USA).
For 18 months, the USA has been working to build support within the union movement for preserving our hunting and fishing heritage. Launched in 2007, the USA is a joint venture of the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership (TRCP) and 21 unions. The hunting and fishing club is open to union members, retirees and their families.
One of USA’s main goals is to support the TRCP’s longstanding dedication to guaranteeing access for hunters and anglers, conserving the fish and wildlife habitat and increasing funding for conservation.
