Listen Up, Then Vote for Your Favorite in Union Plus Union Song Contest

The entries for the Union Plus Union Song Contest are in and now it’s time to vote for your favorite. Forty-five men and women submitted their original union-themed tunes (including nine video performances).
In just a random sampling, I heard a jaunty Irish-influenced fiddle and guitar romp, a tune that would fit right in with the mid-80’s Cow-Punk underground, a stripped-down guitar and harmonica folker, a hard-edge rocker and more.
The songs explore picket lines, jobs and the lack of jobs, solidarity, bosses, activism, politics and just plain union pride. The 45 entries really are worth hearing and I plan to listen to each one before casting my ballot. You should, too.
You have until Oct. 7 to cast your vote, click here. The winner will receive $2,000 to help buy studio time, a new instrument or amp and probably a little left over for a celebratory beverage. Along with the grand prize, one entry will be randomly chosen from the first 10 submissions and receive their choice of an iPhone 3GS or iPod Touch.

Labor Website of the Year
The United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America has won LabourStart‘s 2009 Labor Website of the Year. LabourStart, the labor news service, has sponsored the competition every year since 1997. Trade union websites from around the world compete, and individual union members vote online to decide which is the best union website
As trade union use of the Internet grows, the competition grows as well. This year, 170 sites were nominated, nearly twice as many as last year. LabourStart’s volunteer correspondents from around the world voted for the best ones and winnowed the list down to 12 finalists.
The runners-up, in order, were Union Songs, Our Times, USLEAP and New Unionism Network.
