New Guide Offers Advice for Women Seeking Green Jobs

If you’re a woman considering a career in the growing clean energy economy, check out this new online guide from the U.S. Department of Labor. “Why Green Is Your Color: A Woman’s Guide to a Sustainable Career” is designed to help women find and keep higher-paying jobs in the clean energy economy.

The online publication (click here) will help workers learn about a range of in-demand and emerging jobs, as well as job training opportunities and career development tools, in the clean energy economy. The guide also serves as a resource for workforce development professionals, training providers, educators, career counselors and women’s advocacy organizations.

Sara Manzano-Díaz, director of the Labor Department’s Women’s Bureau, says many occupations in the clean energy economy remain virtually untapped by women.

This guide is an invaluable resource that workforce professionals can use to help women transition into higher paying jobs that serve as a pathway into the middle class. It is also a tool to help fight job segregation.

Three CLUW Chapters Win Berger-Marks Grants

Three Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW) chapters have been awarded grants by the Berger-Marks Foundation to help them mentor and promote young women activist and trade unionists.

The grants are going to CLUW chapters in Denver, Detroit and Philadelphia. Berger-Marks President Linda Foley says that along with the three winning CLUW chapters,

there were many excellent projects proposed by CLUW chapters from around the country. Unfortunately, we could not fund all of them.     

In Denver, the grant for the Mile High chapter will help the chapter’s outreach activities to women unionists and create a network within the Denver area. The foundation will assist with various programs focused on young women, as well as a targeted training to build women’s leadership and networking skills.

Straight Facts About U.S. Economy Show Clear Choice on Nov. 2

  It’s a fact. More private-sector jobs have been created in the last year alone than in the previous eight years.  
 
   

The economy and jobs are the top issues in the Nov. 2 elections. But with all the rhetoric and hot air filling the airways, it’s hard to get the straight facts.

U.S. unemployment is high. But at the same time, more private-sector jobs have been created this year alone than in all eight years of the Bush administration.

And over the past four years, Republicans have voted 11 times to preserve loopholes that encourage American companies to ship jobs overseas.

Workplaces, Laws Fail to Keep up with Growing Role of Women Workers

For the first time in our nation’s history, working women make up nearly half of all U.S. workers, and mothers are the primary breadwinners or co-breadwinners in nearly two-thirds of American families.

This dramatic shift from just a generation ago marks a permanent cultural change, yet most institutions, including the workplace and government have not caught up with this new reality.

The Shriver Report: A Woman’s Nation Changes Everything,” released earlier this month by the Center for American Progress (CAP) and Maria Shriver, looks at the changing face and attitudes of the American worker. The multi-faceted report includes a national poll on attitudes about the rising role of women.
